Plants - Lavender 1

Here is my lavender harvest in a little bowl.  The bees and I have enjoyed this plant for several years now.  It is always a-buzz with activity and I grab a handful to sniff as I walk by sometimes.

But then I got to thinking, why do I just let the fragrant flowers whither and shrink to the earth each year without using them?

I certainly don’t have enough plant material nor the equipment to extract the essential oil, but why not try a little home made massage oil?

For this I shoved the flowers I harvested into an old jar with a tight-fitting lid.  Then I poured the oils in on top and I shook it up.  For this batch I used warmed/melted coconut oil, hazelnut oil and olive oil.

About an hour later I opened to sniff and…nothing.  Just oils.  Hmmm…I wondered if this would work.  I left it overnight and the next morning….wow!  Heavy lavender scent when I open the jar!  Now, I don’t know if that will stay after I strain out the plant material.  I plan to leave it for about a week and then strain it so I can use it as a massage oil.  I’m hoping the nice lavender scent remains.

Even if the scent goes some fresh lavender oil will be in there and lavender is such a wonderful soother I’m okay if the scent is not strong.  These properties will be a nice addition to the oil.
