Delta Unveils an AI-Powered Assistant Called Delta Concierge

Delta is celebrating its centennial with a suite of announcements meant to position the airline as the best in the biz.

At this year’s CES in Las Vegas, Delta debuted a number of features that it’s planning to bring to the flight experience in the coming years, Digital Trends reported on Tuesday. Among the most notable is the way in which the airline will harness artificial intelligence—via the new Delta Concierge—to make travel even more personalized, from pre-trip preparations to the in-flight journey.

Launching this year, the Delta Concierge will be housed within the airline’s app. Using either text or voice input, you’ll be able to interact with it to find out about upcoming passport expiration or visa requirements. The AI-powered service can also direct you through airports, telling you where bag drop and your gate are located. In the future, it will be able to help you pack by describing what the weather is like in your destination, and it will connect to Delta’s in-flight Wi-Fi and seatback entertainment, ensuring that you’re locked in for the entire journey.

“Delta is thinking differently about how we blend the digital and physical experiences, starting with the Fly Delta app,” CEO Ed Bastian said in a statement. “Our vision for Delta Concierge is that it will serve as an AI-powered personal assistant that combines the context of who our customers are and how they like to travel, with the deep knowledge and insights we’ve built as the world’s most reliable airline.”  

Along with these new AI features, Delta is hoping to make your travels even more seamless by partnering with companies to help with the legs before and after your flight. In the spring, you’ll be able to link your SkyMiles account to Uber, allowing you to earn miles when you take Ubers to and from the airport. And the airline is also working with Joby’s electric air taxis, with service expected to begin at the airline’s New York and Los Angeles hubs once it gets approval from local and federal agencies.

“Delta is bringing together innovative technologies and partnerships to create a connected travel experience from start to finish,” Bastian said. “This creates more choice for customers to get to their destination in a way that works best for them.”
