Idina Menzel Returns to Broadway in New Musical ‘Redwood’ in 2025

Idina Menzel is slated to return to Broadway in 2025.

Menzel will appear in the new musical Redwood, which she co-conceived with Tina Landau, who directed the production and wrote the book. The show features music by Kate Diaz.

The Broadway theater and exact dates for Redwood have yet to be announced. Additional cast and creative team members will be revealed at a later date.

The musical is slated to come to Broadway after premiering at San Diego’s La Jolla Playhouse in February. The show follows Jesse, played by Menzel, a grieving mother, who drives across the country to find solace in the woods of Northern California.

Menzel last appeared on Broadway in If/Then, which ran from March 2014 to March 2015. Her well-known Broadway roles include originating the roles of Maureen in Rent and Elphaba in Wicked. She is also the voice of Elsa in Frozen and recently appeared in Netflix’s You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.

“I’m so thrilled to be returning to Broadway, and the fact that I get to do it with Redwood, a musical that means so much to me, makes it even more special,” Menzel said. “This show has lived in my bones for fifteen years, from the very first time Tina and I discussed working together. Finally getting to do it on Broadway is really a dream come true.”

Landau directed Mother Play, currently running on Broadway starring Jessica Lange, and is also slated to direct Floyd Collins on Broadway in spring 2025. Her previous Broadway directing credits include The Spongebob Musical, Superior Donuts and Bells Are Ringing.
