Normal People’s Éanna Hardwicke to Narrate Sally Rooney’s New Audiobook

The Sally Rooney cinematic universe is coming to her next book. The author will release Intermezzo, her fourth novel, on Sept. 24 and The Hollywood Reporter can exclusively announce that Normal People actor Éanna Hardwicke will narrate the audio version.

“Her writing was a real gift to act, so it is a privilege to get to share in the Intermezzo story,” Hardwicke, who played Rob Hegarty in the Emmy-nominated 2020 Hulu series, says. “And to try and capture Sally’s inimitable voice.”

The novel, which follows the bestselling Conversations With Friends (2017), Normal People (2018) and Beautiful World Where Are You? (2021), will continue the author’s tradition of exploring class, politics and social structures through the lens of highly interpersonal relationships. The story centers around brothers Peter, a successful lawyer, and Ivan, a competitive chess player, with little in common except for the recent death of their father. In the aftermath of their loss, Peter struggles to balance relationships with two different women and Ivan becomes entwined with an older woman.

“Sally has a beautiful way of bringing us into her character’s hearts and minds,” adds Hardwicke. “Normal People, like so many others, played a big part in my life, and I have been moved and transported by each of Sally’s wonderful novels. They do what great stories do: make you laugh, make you cry and — hopefully — see the world a little more vividly afterward.”

The audiobook edition of Intermezzo will be published by Macmillan Audio on Sept. 24, 2024, and will be available wherever audiobooks are sold. Hardwicke will next be seen in the three-part limited series A Very Royal Scandal directed by Julian Jarrold for Blueprint Television and Amazon MGM Studios; and in the feature William Tell, directed by Nick Hamm.
