Forget Sneaker Raffles, Our Staffers Are Picking The Best Dress Shoes
We’ve made no secret of our love for sneakers, after all a passion for hyped sneaker releases and collaborations is what this magazine was founded around. However, as much as we’d like to, you can’t wear sneakers everywhere — sometimes you need to lace up a pair of dress shoes.
Sure, we’ve all seen the likes of Questlove hit the red carpet wearing a pair of Crocs with a suit or Justin Bieber opt for huge punk-inspired Balenciaga stompers to match an oversized suit, but the exception doesn’t prove the rule. Nine times out of ten, you’re best off keeping things classic with a pair of tried-and-tested dress shoes.
And the selection of styles available at the minute means there’s no excuse not to own a pair. Thanks to the likes of Tyler, The Creator, loafers have never been more popular, the mule-ment keeps on delivering formal slip-on styles, and listeners of the only podcast that matters (AKA Throwing Fits) have been gearing up for a post-sneaker world for some time.
Whether you’re planning a summer wedding look, need suitable shoes for an expensive dinner, or want to spice up your day-to-day looks, our staffers have picked their favorite footwear for when things get formal. Check out the selection below.
“I don’t like to categorize any shoes or clothing into strictly formal or casual categories. For me, it’s much more fun to be able to dress up or down some pieces. These chunky loafers are a perfect option for this and they are much lighter than they appear.”
“Personally, this is an easy pick. The sole on Derbys can be a pretty big turn-off, both aesthetically and comfort-wise, but Auxilary solves both of those problems with a dose of skate DNA. By combing the comfort of a skate shoe, the slick profile of a dress shoe, and blacked-out leather construction, you get an unbeatable banger for those dressed-up occasions.”
“Seeing these worn by Filling Pieces founder Guillaume Philibert at his wedding makes me want to buy my first pair of loafers. Crafted in smooth leather, the gold-colored handshake bridge sets this pair apart from the rest, adding some flair that is often much-needed when you have to dress up. A must-have in my opinion.”
“Boat shoes are not only versatile but they can also be worn at any time of the year. The chunky sole on this pair is a nice addition for folks that don’t mind a couple of extra inches of height now and then.”
“If you had told me two years ago Penny Loafer would be back in full force in 2022; I would ask why and how? Here, Our Legacy makes a solid but straightforward argument for the beloved dress shoe, giving me a reason to add it to my rotation.”
“The post-sneaker world has me in a chokehold right now and I can’t remember the last time I bought a pair of sneakers. These leather moccasins have joined my growing collection of leather shoes, however, and I have been wearing them with everything. These don’t only match perfectly with formal trousers, I’ve been getting wear out of these with white socks and jorts.”
