This 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500 Is Pristine and Now It’s up for Auction

Shelby Mustangs are foundational lore for much of Ford‘s legacy and, these days, fetch high prices at auction, in part because of their relative scarcity. Now, a 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500 is now up for auction and will likely hammer down for many multiples of $4,790, what documentation shows the first owner originally paid for it.

The car was finished on January 18, 1967, and delivered to a dealership in Decatur, Georgia. It was painted Lime Gold at the factory, but its new owner had it repainted black, which it remained for several decades, until the car was sold in 2015, according to Bring A Trailer. The Shelby Mustang was then bought by its second owner, who undertook a full restoration that was completed in 2019.

In that time, the car was repainted its original Lime Gold. Also, the 428-cubic-inch V-8 was rebuilt along with the four-speed manual transmission, and new 15-inch Magstar wheels were installed. Already on the car were options selected when it was purchased new, including an AM radio, folding rear seat, power steering, power front disc brakes, shoulder harnesses, a rear spoiler, extensions to the fender, and air scoops.

Bring A Trailer also notes some flaws, including a minor accident the Shelby Mustang appears to have been involved in and, as a result, a replacement left-front fender and fender apron. The hood, which is fiberglass, is also not original, and neither is the ram-air scoop. Inside, the woodgrain steering wheel is not original, and the car shows 92,537 miles on the odometer, suggesting it didn’t spend the last half-century forgotten in a barn.

Perhaps most interesting is the Shelby window sticker included in the sale, which shows a base price of $4,195 for the “Shelby GT 500 with 428 Cobra Le Mans 355 HP Engine.” As standard features, the car had an extra cooling package, tachometer, and “remote control outside rear view mirror.” Additional options purchased at the time included the power steering and brakes, deluxe wheels, and the radio, edging the price up to that $4,790 total.

As of Monday, bidding at Bring A Trailer is up to $152,000, with three days to go before the auction closes, suggesting it will finish a bit higher, if not double. That would’ve been a pretty good return on your investment even considering inflation. As the odometer shows, the Shelby Mustang gave some driving enjoyment, too.
