21 Should-See Exhibitions and Occasions Throughout Hong Kong Artwork Month

Whether in landmark museums or lesser- known galleries, Hong Kong comes alive with arty activity throughout March. Here’s how to make the most of a culture-crammed adventure in the city.

From March 23 to April 26, Art Intelligence Global presents Jeff Koons: 1979-1999 at its Hong Kong exhibition space. It features some of the artist’s most famous and definitive works, many of which are being shown in Asia for the first time.

BLINDSPOT GALLERY

Xiyadie is a self-taught traditional Chinese papercut artist who narrates his journey as a homosexual male from rural China. Xiyadie: Butterfly Dream, which begins on March 26, marks the artist’s solo debut at the gallery, his biggest-ever exhibition in Asia.

BEN BROWN FINE ARTS

Ben Brown has enlisted curator Joachim Pissarro to exhibit Celestial Mechanics: Form and Future in the Work of Gerhard Richter and Sean Scully, bringing together works by these two celebrated European painters and presenting them in dialogue. From March 23.

PODIUM

Art gallery Podium is hosting its grand opening and inaugural exhibition on March 23. Spearheaded by Charlotte Lin and Cusson Cheng, Podium is a robust platform that champions underrepresented emerging and mid-career artists.

Love Letters: Everlasting Sentiments from the Xubaizhai Collection explores the deep emotions encapsulated in both ancient and contemporary art. It also features large-scale installation Freezing Water: Between Here and There by Hong Kong artist Tsang Kin-wah.

HONG KONG PALACE MUSEUM

The exhibition Botticelli to Van Gogh: Masterpieces from The National Gallery, London showcases 52 paintings by the likes of Botticelli, Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Goya, Turner, Constable, Monet and Van Gogh.

Shanshui: Echoes and Signals is a thematic exhibition exploring complex connections between landscape and humanity.

WESTK11 FUNFEST

The family-friendly, three-week- long WestK FunFest comprises workshops, performances and art installations taking place in and around Art Park, Freespace and the Xiqu Centre.

ART BASEL

Art Basel Hong Kong brings 243 galleries from 40 countries to HKCEC on March 28-30. It doesn’t get bigger than this.

HONG KONG ARTS CENTRE

HKAC’s Creators of Tomorrow initiative supports emerging artists and curators in Hong Kong, providing practical experiences that help participants to launch their careers in the arts. From March 15, the group exhibition To Morrow and Beyond documents their experiences.

Taking place between March 28-31, Art Central 2024 returns to the Central harbourfront with a dynamic programme of live performances, screenings, installations, talks and tours. This year features 95 galleries, 70 percent of which are from Asia.

PACE GALLERY

From March 25, Sea Change is artist Kylie Manning’s first-ever solo exhibition in Hong Kong. It showcases works created in the last year that explore enactments of movement and accumulation as they relate to figuration and abstraction.

Beginning on March 21, Touching How and Why and Where is an exhibition of new studio paintings by Katharina Grosse, known for her compressor-driven spraying technique that blasts coloured paint across panels, objects, architectural interiors and exteriors.

HAUSER & WIRTH

Catch American conceptual artist Glenn Ligon’s first solo exhibition in Greater China. Over the past three and half decades, Ligon has explored American history, society and literature to pose questions about race and identity.

Maggi Hambling: The Night is a solo exhibition by the renowned British artist at Pearl Lam’s Hong Kong gallery from March 26.

SAATCHI YATES

The London-based gallery comes to Hong Kong for the first time with a pop-up show at H Queens (17/F) presenting buzzy new Korean artist Soujin Lee’s first Asian solo show. Exploring relationships and human connections with lusciously catchy paintings, it’s not to be missed.

We consume culture the same way we consumer food, right? Such was the thinking of the three Hong Kong gallerists who founded Supper Club art fair, running on March 25-30 at the Fringe Club. With exhibitions, performances and F&B stands, as well as late night closing times, there’s plenty to keep you entertained.

Starting 16 March, Who is Who is an exhibition of new work by artist Sarah Morris featuring her latest film ETC alongside a site-specific wall painting Lippo (Paul Rudolph).

WHITE CUBE

From March 26, White Cube presents British artist Louise Giovanelli’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong. Exploring the tension between representation and materiality, figuration and abstraction, Giovanelli’s works consider the significance and history of painting as a system of representation.

WOAW GALLERY

Kevin Poon’s Queen’s Road Central gallery presents the solo exhibition Moonshine, by American painter Clinton King, from March 25. Expect kaleidoscopic works with sweeping brushworks.

Sounding Lines, starting on March 16, is a solo exhibition by New York-based artist Aki Sasamoto that explores the boundaries and interrelations among people and their physical surroundings.
