Mezcal Amarás Is Launching an Expensive New Limited-Edition Mezcal

Agave spirits are incredibly popular at the moment, but that’s mostly relegated to tequila sales. Mezcal currently makes up just a small portion of the category, but it’s growing every year. There are many brands to choose from, including a few celebrity-backed ventures. But one that has been around for more than a decade and is known for its quality is Mezcal Amarás, which just announced the details of a new limited-edition, high-end expression.

Santiago Suarez and Luis Niño de Rivera, along with some other partners, founded Mezcal Amarás in 2010. In 2023, Beam Suntory (now called Global Suntory Spirits) entered into a “strategic distribution partnership” with the brand specifically for the U.S. market. The core lineup consists of mezcal made in three Mexican states—Oaxaca, Guerrero, and Durango—with Espadin (blanco and reposado), Cupreata, a Espadin-Tobala Blend, and the more recent Americana expressions in the portfolio. Then there is the Logia line, consisting of limited-edition mezcals made from agave varietals that are less commonly used, like Cenizo, Sacatoro, and Tepeztate.

The latest release in the Logia portfolio is called Lumbre, a pricy and very limited release that is made using the titular agave varietal. According to the brand, Lumbre agave comes from the San Pedro Totomachapam region of Oaxaca, where it takes at least a decade to fully mature. The agave is hand milled before being cooked in a traditional earthen oven. It’s fermented in clay pots using wild yeast and then distilled in a clay pot still, another very traditional production method.

“Lumbre is a true masterpiece, each bottle embodying the intersection of time, nature, and tradition,” said Suarez in a statement. “It marks the first-ever release of this exclusive agave in the mezcal category and a unique recipe that will never be repeated, making it a true collector’s bottle and a tribute to the spirit of Oaxaca.” We did not get to sample this new mezcal, but official tasting notes describe “currant and mineral on the nose, toasted mushroom and nougat-like sweetness on the palate, followed by a smoky, creamy finish.” 

This is the third small batch mezcal from Amarás this year, which previously released a Madrecuishe expression (2,060 bottles) and a Coyote expression (5,160 bottles). But Lumbre is being released on a much smaller scale with just 399 bottles total, 184 of which are coming to the U.S. with a price tag of $400 per bottle. You can find Lumbre at specialty liquor stores around the country or online from Remedy Liquor, and it will also be available via BlockBar starting this Friday, November 15.
