Heesen’s New 220-Foot ‘Sparta’ Is Its Largest Steel Superyacht Yet

Heesen’s newest fleet member is the very definition of epic.

The 220-foot Sparta is the largest steel motor yacht the Dutch shipyard has built to date, eclipsing previous title holder Lusine by a full 23 feet. Heesen has launched more than 200 yachts in the past half century, making it quite difficult to rank at the top of the fleet for size.

Sparta—which was just launched, according to a statement shared by Heesen on Monday—was born out of a concept that the Dutch yard presented with Winch Design in 2018. The British studio penned both the interior and exterior of the fully custom cruiser, combining Heesen’s DNA with modern design solutions. The owners deviated very little from the original concept, making only a minor adjustment to the swimming pool aft.

Sparta showcases a low, sporty profile with athletic lines and a distinctive reverse bow. The exterior is finished in a striking “Snow White” livery, with swathes of white juxtaposed with metallic red and gray accents. Tinted glass also runs from bow to stern, emphasizing the impressive overall length of the cruiser.

The infinity pool spans some 21 feet.

The 1,200 GT interior is equally as elegant as the exterior. Each deck is inspired by a different element, with the lower deck based on water, the main deck paying tribute to earth, and the upper deck an homage to air. The three distinct levels can be accessed by the sculptural oak staircase or the glass elevator.

The main deck centers around a large and luxurious salon, while the lower deck is home to a 700-square-foot Japanese-inspired wellness area, with an elliptical whirlpool, a steam room, a sauna, a gym, and a beauty area. Accommodation is spread throughout, with two separate owner’s suites on a private deck and four guest suites on the main deck.

Sparta‘s exterior features an open-air beach terrace, an inviting 21-foot infinity pool, and a swim platform with direct access to the water. Other highlights include a plush foredeck lounge and an airy flybridge with a Jacuzzi. All exterior decks are dotted with furniture designed by Winch and built by Siebensee and Leerdam.

“At Heesen, we take pride in our ability to create complex custom yachts that are expertly engineered and built to meet the highest Dutch quality standards,” said Peter van der Zanden, head of engineering at Heesen.

Sparta will now undergo the final commissioning phases in Heesen’s harbor before heading to the North Sea for intensive sea trials.
