McLaren Plans To Sell a Customer Version of Its 2027 Le Mans Hypercar

McLaren is ready to make its return to Le Mans, and it wants to bring you along for at least part of the ride.
The British supercar maker unveiled the Le Mans hypercar that it will enter in the 2027 edition of endurance racing’s biggest event hours before the start of this year’s installment of the race. That wasn’t the only big news from the marque, though. It also announced plans to build and sell a customer version of the vehicle.
If you’re wondering why McLaren is previewing a car that won’t hit the track for two more years, it’s because 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of its one and only triumph at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The McLaren F1 GTR didn’t just take the overall checker flag in 1995, though. Other examples of the legendary racer finished third, fourth, fifth, and 13th (two others failed to complete the race). It makes sense that the automaker would want to celebrate a performance as dominant as its 1995 race.

Because it won’t be racing for two years, details are still a little sketchy. The race car will be run by McLaren and United Autosport, which is co-owned by the boss of its Formula 1 team, Zak Brown, and entered in the LMDh class. Unlike the more bespoke LMH cars, like Ferrari’s victorious 499P, LMDh vehicles utilize shared parts. McLaren’s hypercar will feature a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis supplied by Dallara (which is also used by the Cadillac V-Series.R and BMW M Hybrid V8) and be powered by a hybrid-assisted twin-turbo V-6. Current class regulations limit the electrified setup’s output to 662 hp. Expect more info to filter out in the years to come.
Non-professional race car drivers will be able to purchase their own version of the hypercar through the new Project: Endurance program. McLaren says “only the slightest of refinements” differentiates the customer version from the actual Le Mans car. It’s not yet clear what these will be, but Road & Track reports that the version you can buy will feature “bespoke hybrid unit.” Customers will also get behind-the-scenes access to the car’s development between now and the 2027 24 Hours of Le Mans, along with an inclusive two-year track program that will allow them to drive at “top-tier” race circuits.

How much will the car and program cost? That remains to be seen, but McLaren is not afraid to release a seven-figure hypercar. Don’t be surprised if this track-only beast turns out to be the latest.
