Dethleffs Upgrades All-Wheel-Drive Camper Van With Pop-Up Tent

Dethleffs is trying to make it even easier to bring even more people along on your next off-road adventure.
The German RV brand showed off a new family-oriented concept based on the Globebus Performance 4×4 at this year’s Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf, according to New Atlas. The prototype adds a pop-up tent to the rugged camper van, increasing sleeping capacity in the process.
The Globebus Performance 4×4 is far from Dethleffs’s biggest RV, but it still offers more than enough capability for most of us. The brand’s first all-wheel-drive model, which debuted at last year’s edition of the annual trade show, is based on the Volkswagen Crafter and is powered by a 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine connected to an eight-speed automatic. It rides on a lifted chassis and features a reinforced front axle, a rear differential lock, and air suspension.
The concept is based on the standard Dethleffs Globebus Performance 4×4

The camper van measures just 22.5 feet bumper-to-bumper, but the manufacturer has done a good job maximizing the available space. Behind the driver and passenger seats, there’s a table that doubles as a dinette or work station, and a bench that can seat two. The vehicle also features a compact kitchenette with a fold-out counter and a bathroom that includes a toilet and shower, but the bulk of the interior space is reserved for sleeping. The back area of the vehicle is equipped with a raised platform that can be configured with either a double bed or a pair of twin mattresses, which provides plenty of room for storage beneath. This meant that while the van could sit four, it really only had room to sleep two.
This won’t be the case if the concept makes it to production, though. The upgraded Globebus Performance 4×4 comes equipped with a pop-up tent. The deployable structure features a fiberglass roof and fabric walls and comes equipped with a double foam mattress. It’s not accessible from inside the van—which is a bit of a bummer—but it doubles the sleeping capacity to four. And, if you replace the front table and bench with a single mattress, which is an option, you could even sleep five.
The van can sleep up to four adults thanks to its pop-up tent

Dethleffs has yet to announce where it plans to sell the pop-up tent version of the Globebus Performance 4×4. The photos the company has shared suggest that it is basically production-ready. If it does make it to market, expect it to cost more than the standard van’s €120,000 (roughly $140,000) starting price.
