A Collection of 22 BMW M Cars Is Going Up for Grabs Later This Month
Here’s a quick and easy way to fill out one’s collection of BMW sports cars.
Later this month, RM Sotheby’s is auctioning off a selection of 22 of the automaker’s M cars as part of its annual Munich sale. Dubbed “The Best of M” collection, the assortment of vehicles includes some of the greatest (and most exclusive) performance models to ever wear the German marque’s iconic roundel.
BMW M—the M stands for Motorsport—has been around since the early 1970s, but it wasn’t until the latter part of that decade that it released its first road-going model, the M1. Since then, the division has released souped-up versions of nearly every single BMW car, SUV, and, in recent years, EVs. Because of this, the M name has become synonymous with German performance.

The headline car from the collection has to be a 1980 example of the M1. The rare coupe wears a special BMW M-themed livery and is powered by a 3.5-liter inline-six that makes 273 hp and 243 ft lbs of torque. This example figures to be in great shape thanks to a comprehensive restoration that it underwent last decade. It’s expected to sell for between $600,000 and $700,000.
The collection includes nine different M3 iterations, the best of which is the 1990 Sport Evolution finished in Brilliantrot over a black leather interior. The 1-of-600 variant is expected to fetch between $235,000 and $295,000. If you’re looking for something a little more recent, there is a 2023 M4 CSL, which is expected to command between $175,000 – $235,000, and a 2023 M4 Edition 50 Jahre, which will likely sell for between $105,000 and $140,000.

It should be noted that the collection does include three non-M cars. The first of these is the 2002 Turbo (expected to sell for between $115,000 to $165,000), a potent two-door that helped BMW realize there was customer interest in higher-trim performance models. There’s also a Z1 ($105,000 – $140,000 ) and an Alpina Roadster V8 ($350,000 to $445,000). The trio may not technically count as M cars, but it’s hard to imagine even the most pedantic purist caring about their presence.

There are some bargains to be had in the sale, but if you feel like walking away with all 22 cars, expect to pay somewhere in the neighborhood of $4 million.
