A 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 With Just 5,000 Miles Is Up for Auction
Here’s one muscle car auction that will really take you back in time.
A beautifully maintained 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 is currently up for bid on Bring a Trailer. The white and black coupe is a real stunner, but its most attractive can be found on its odometer, where you’ll see that the car has totaled just 5,000 miles since leaving the factory.
It’s the 1960s ‘Stangs that tend to get most of the attention when people think about the nameplate’s golden era. But, in recent years, we’ve seen examples from the early 1970s start to get the love that they deserve. The Mach 1 is part of the reason why. Although it was introduced in 1969, the performance variant, with its sculpted body kit and more potent engine options, wouldn’t come into its own until the start of the “Me” Decade. The model would be offered for the rest of the Mustang’s first generation and is now viewed as one of the greatest muscle cars of all time (it came in at no. 24 in our latest rankings).

The Mach 1 up for auction dates back to the variant’s third year of production. It was given to its original (and so far only) owner for their 21st birthday, and they did a fantastic job specing their present. The fastback coupe is finished in whit,e topped with a black graphic package that includes side stripes and “Mach 1” decals, and rides on a set of 15-inch magnesium wheels. The interior, meanwhile, features black knit vinyl Mach 1 bucket seats and a sport deck rear bench, along with a working AM/FM radio.
Under the hood, you’ll find a 351-cubic-inch Cleveland equipped with a four-barrel carburetor. The mill is mated to a four-speed manual gearbox, and when it was brand new, it was capable of making 281 hp and 370 hp. The powertrain would seem to be in decent shape, considering all the care the car has clearly been shown over the decades and the fact that it’s covered just 5,000 miles, an unimaginably low number for a classic Mustang that still runs.

Ready to find a place in your stable for this Mach 1. The auction runs through this Wednesday, Dec. 10. As of press time, bidding has reached $70,000, but that number figures to climb before it’s all over.
