Porsche Just Restored This 20-Year-Old Carrera GT Back to Zero Miles

A 20-year-old Porsche was completely refurbished recently, which is not all that unusual. What is unusual, though, is this time the marque did the restoring, and did such a good job that the carmaker says the 2005 Carrera GT was “technically restored to new condition.”

The car in question is owned by a Porsche enthusiast in Puerto Rico, who also wanted a new livery—and not just any livery, but one inspired by the 917 that won the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans.

“The vehicle was completely disassembled, technical components such as the V10 engine were overhauled from the ground up, and the carbon parts were recoated,” Porsche said in a news release. “Subsequently, the originally silver-coloured youngtimer was given the famous Salzburg Design at the customer’s request.”

The livery is hand-painted, and it had to be sketched and rendered before being applied, as the Carrera GT’s dimensions and geometry are different than the 917. A matte-black carbon in various places completes the look, along with black alloy wheels. On the inside, there is a lot of red Alcantara, which covers the door panels, dashboard, center console, and steering wheel, in addition to the luggage set and luggage compartment.

Under the hood is a 5.7-liter V-10 engine making 604 horsepower, mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. The auto’s curb weight is just over 3,042 pounds, making it exceptionally light. For its time, the Carrera GT was one of the best cars on the market, and it’s aged perhaps even better, becoming a hot commodity in the secondary market.

The 2005 Carrera GT was restored as part of Porsche’s Sonderwunsch program, which is for customization of new cars from the marque and restoration of old ones. All this is done with an eye on transparency, to protect the vehicle’s value. Porsche issues documentation when it’s finished with restoration jobs and updates its company archive with new information about the car. Prices were not given for the restoration, but the customer sounds pretty happy.

“The Sonderwunsch experts worked with great passion and attention to detail,” Victor Gómez, the Carrera GT’s owner, said. “Now I own a Carrera GT in new condition, with zero kilometers on the odometer, and outside and inside according to my personal ideas.”
