The Honda Base Station Trailer Weighs Less Than 1,500 Pounds
Honda’s got something special in the work that few could have seen coming.
The Japanese automaker’s American subsidiary unveiled a futuristic travel trailer prototype called the Base Station earlier this week. The caravan was designed and developed with flexibility in mind and is meant to make outdoor adventures accessible to everyone.
Honda’s unexpected trailer was developed by the Honda U.S. R&D team, which is behind the briefcase-size Motocompacto e-scooter from a few years ago. And just like its predecessor, the Base Station, with its minimalist shape and clean lines, shows that style doesn’t have to come at the cost of function and utility.
At 1,500 pounds, the Base Station is light enough to be towed by a Honda CR-V

The trailer’s interior should prove to be just as attractive as its sleek exterior. The base version of the vehicle features a pull-out futon that can be turned into a queen-size bed, a roof-mounted tent that can sleep two (bumping total sleeping capacity to four), and an A/C unit. That’s barebones for a travel trailer in 2026—even a compact model—but each of the vehicle’s five side windows can be swapped out for a modular add-on, like an outdoor shower, kitchenette, or extra battery pack.
The ability to customize the Base Station will appeal to many campers, but its most eye-catching feature just might be its weight. Honda only refers to its “lightweight design” in its press release, but several outlets, including Car and Driver and Motor Trend, report it will tip the scales at less than 1,500 pounds. When you consider that some luxury options can weigh up to 10,000 pounds, that’s pretty incredible. It also means that the caravan can be towed by a compact SUV, like Honda’s perennial best-seller, the CR-V, or an EV without completely wiping out its range.
“Just like the Motocompacto, Base Station is the product of fresh and innovative thinking,” Jane Nakagawa, vice president of Honda American R&D business unit, said in a statement. “We designed it to make camping more accessible and enjoyable for families across America.”
The Base Station unveiled this week is just a prototype, but it sure sounds like the model is headed to production. Car and Driver reports that the trailer will likely cost between $20,000 and $40,000 whenever it does end up going on sale.
