Capricorn’s .5 Million Supercar Will Be Limited to 19 Examples

Capricorn, a German hypercar maker that unveiled its new 01 Zagato just a few months ago, has now shown a couple of operational prototypes in Paris at the Salon Rétromobile. The cars appeared in bright yellow and were shown ahead of deliveries that are said to begin later this year.

The Capricorn 01 Zagato was made in collaboration with Zagato, the Italian coachbuilder. The car is priced at $3.5 million, and there will be just 19 examples made. Capricorn has said that it is the world’s first hypercar with a body designed by Zagato.

The car is powered by a V-8 engine making over 900 metric horsepower and possibly close to 1,000 mechanical horsepower. The power is sent to the rear wheels, the transmission is a five-speed manual, and the engine is supercharged, meaning that the 01 Zagato should be a driver’s delight.

The cars are hand-built in Germany and, beyond the power, are designed to be lightweight, with carbon fiber everywhere, including in the structure and body. Capricorn has said that the 01 Zagato will weigh less than 1,200 kilograms, or less than 2,645 pounds, making it exceptionally light. Capricorn is targeting a zero-to-60 time of less than 3.0 seconds.

The car was first seen last October, before making its in-person debut in Belgium at the Zoute Grand Prix. The prototypes shown in Paris are test cars, according to DuPont Registry, used for speed and calibration tests; a third car is also in the works for testing, none of which will be part of the 01 Zagatos limited run of just 19.

Capricorn is only making that many 01 Zagatos as a tribute to the day Zagato was founded, on April 19, 1919. Customers will start getting the first 01 Zagatos later this year.

“The Capricorn 01 Zagato represents the culmination of everything we have learnt from decades of pioneering ultra-lightweight materials, technologies and construction techniques,” Robertino Wild, Capricorn’s CEO, said in a statement.

“Each prototype of the Capricorn 01 Zagato allows us to deepen the relationship between design, engineering, and driver—and to validate our decisions under real conditions before production begins later this year,” Wild added in Paris.
