Clase Azul Unveils a New Tequila Inside a World Cup-Inspired Decanter
Excitement is ramping up as the World Cup approaches, with football fans counting down the days until the first match takes place this June. Spirits brands have been capitalizing on this, as we’ve previously reported, releasing special-edition bottles to commemorate the occasion. The latest comes from luxury tequila brand Clase Azul, which is releasing a new decanter—not officially affiliated with the World Cup or any team, it should be noted—called Spirit of Champions, and we have the details to share.
Clase Azul is known for its expensive tequilas in handmade ceramic decanters, which customers often save long after the liquid is gone as art pieces in their homes. That’s because the design of some of these bottles is stunning, with limited editions like the Día de Muertos series standing out in particular. The brand does try to make sure that the liquid inside these special editions is something different from what you might find in other bottles, and that is the case with Spirit of Champions. This is a joven tequila created by master distiller Viridiana Tinoco, meaning it’s a blend of ages—specifically, tequila aged for 28 months in “French wooden vats made from fine-grain oak from the Forest of Tronçais,” along with some unaged blanco tequila in the mix. According to the brand, the use of these vats to age the tequila results in “a slower, more nuanced interaction between wood and spirit, favoring aromatic refinement and structural clarity over overt oak influence.”
As mentioned earlier, this is not an official World Cup release, but rather one that is inspired by Mexico’s third time hosting the competition and the lofty concept of “the universal human spirit awakened when the world gathers as one.”
“Moments like these transcend sport; they bring cultures together to create lasting memories,” said Clase Azul founder and CEO, Arturo Lomelí, in a statement. “This limited edition is a tribute to the unique magic that emerges when different nations pursue the same trophy and, for 90 minutes, remind us that shared passion connects us across borders.”
We have not yet been able to sample this tequila, but the official tasting notes describe aromas of cooked agave, coconut, toasted wood, and fresh vanilla on the nose, followed by more cooked agave, walnut, almond, and toasted coconut on the palate. The decanter is ivory with gold lines, and features the Clase Azul emblem at the center with malachite inlays. 10,0000 bottles are being released starting April 14 with a hefty price tag of $1,700 apiece. If you want to find one, they will be available at the new brand home in Mexico City, Casa de los Leones, as well at the Clase Azul Boutique in San José del Cabo and select retailers around the world.
