The new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door may not come with a V-8, but that doesn’t mean it’s lacking for power.

The German luxury marque’s performance division has just unveiled the redesigned version of its coupe-style sedan. Going forward, the model will only be available with a fully electric powertrain, making it the first all-electric model in AMG history. The news is sure to make purists groan, but the tradeoff is an output that reaches into four-digit territory.

Despite a rather dramatic redesign, the big story here is the new powertrain. The GT 4-Door will be built on the new AMG.EA platform and is powered by a trio of axial flux motors fed by a 106-kWh battery situated beneath the floor of the vehicle. The configuration of the motors—one on the front axle and two on the rear—give the EV a rear-biased all-wheel drive setup. Two trims will be available at launch, the GT55, which makes 805 hp and 1,328 ft lbs of torque, and the GT63, which makes 1,153 hp and 1,475 ft lbs of torque.

Yes, those figures are correct. The GT 4-Door is a true super sedan. Mercedes says the GT55 can sprint from zero to 62 mph in just 2.4 seconds. The GT63? It can do the same in two seconds flat. Top speed, meanwhile, comes out to an electronically limited 186 mph for both versions.

The GT 4-Door is an EV, though, so output isn’t the only performance figure of note. Mercedes says the sedan has a range of 435 miles on the forgiving WLTP test cycle, which means likely means an EPA estimate closer to 300 miles. That should be more than enough range for most drivers, but, in case it isn’t, the battery can be charged from 10- to 80-percent capacity in just 10 minutes.

The electric GT 4-Door does look significantly different than its predecessor. It features a sleek shape and flowing lines—it has a low drag coefficient of just 0.22 cD— that calls to mind AMG’s GT XX concept from last year. The production car’s look is a more restrained, but it’s still a sedan guaranteed to turn heads. Its lighting package, especially the illuminated Panamerica grille, also feels fresh and helps ensure that no one will mistake this EV for a jellybean.

The new interior lacks some of the more futuristic touches of the concept, but it still makes clear that you are in a performance vehicle. The front, as is Mercedes’s wont, is dominated by screens, including a digital gauge cluster, an infotainment screen angled to the driver, and a dedicated passenger display. The middle display can be used to cycle through drive modes, including the new AMGFORCE Sport+, which features simulated gear shifts and a soundtrack based on the brand’s sonorous V-8. The rest of the cabin is surprisingly room, especially in the back, and everything comes covered in the premium materials you expect from the marque, including grippy microfiber on the steering wheel and supple leather on the seats.

Intrigued? Fortunately, the wait for the new GT 4-Door won’t be long. The GT53 is expected to go on sale later this year, with the GT63 following early next year. Pricing has yet to be announced, but outlets like Car & Driver expect it to start at around $150,000.
