Pioneer Yachts Just Launched Its First Solar-Electric Catamaran

Pioneer by name, pioneer by nature.

Pioneer Yachts, the German shipyard founded by engineer and entrepreneur Mike Frank just two years ago, has launched the first unit of its new solar-electric catamaran, blazing a new trail in emissions-free yachting.

Aptly christened Pioneer One, the inaugural PY60 is centered on efficiency, autonomy, and simplicity. The practical 60-foot platform was designed around energy generation and storage, allowing for continuous cruising in all manner of conditions.

“This isn’t another electric catamaran,” Frank said in a statement. “It’s a completely new kind of yacht for this segment, built for real operation.”

Rather than convert a traditional motor yacht to electric propulsion, the team built a new catamaran featuring the latest green tech. The multihull is topped with a solar roof that generates clean, green energy from the sun. That power is stored within the onboard battery banks and used to run the electric propulsion system or the hotel load.

The “48-volt electrical backbone” is designed to support long-range cruising, according to Pioneer. The cat can run purely on electricity for “typical cruising distances,” with diesel generators kicking in if more grunt is required. The yard didn’t share the exact range, but says the PY60 has a top speed of 11 knots and a cruising speed of 7.5 knots. Simplified onboard systems and intuitive controls reduce the need for a professional crew, too.

The PY60 isn’t an eyesore, either. Designed by Cossutti & Ganz, the exterior eschews that typically boxy catamaran silhouette in favor of a slightly more curvy profile. The interior, brought to life by fellow Italian firm Micheletti + Partners, features large panoramic windows that invite light in and afford views out. Pioneer says the yacht is also equipped with the largest cockpit door in its class, creating a nice flow between the salon and aft deck.

Frank plans to use Pioneer One personally, capturing real-world cruising data that will help to refine future production models. “Pioneer One will be more than a showcase yacht; it will become our operational reference platform,” Frank explains. “By using the yacht ourselves and monitoring its performance under real conditions, we can continue refining the concept and ensure that future boats are shaped by practical experience.”

The flagship will now undergo sea trials before it officially debuts at the Cannes Yachting Festival in the fall. The event will be held across two waterfront venues (Vieux Port and Port Canto) from September 8 to 13.
