Jim Beam is Releasing a New Extra Aged Cask Strength Rye Whiskey
As we’ve covered before, the James B. Beam Distilling Co., the home of Jim Beam bourbon, has been giving some of its budget whiskeys significant upgrades over the past few years. One of those that has gotten arguably the most attention is Old Overholt, and the latest example of this is the 2026 edition of the brand’s Extra Aged Cask Strength expression.
Old Overholt is best known as a budget rye whiskey that still manages to deliver a lot of flavor. It’s made from a 51 percent rye grain mashbill (or thereabouts), and works very well in cocktails. The brand originated as a Pennsylvania rye whiskey, something that Beam paid tribute to with the release of A. Overholt in 2024, a Monongahela-style rye made from a mashbill of 80 percent rye grain and 20 percent malted barley. Beam has owned Old Overholt since 1987, and for many years the core expression was a bottom shelf bottle that was still a favorite of many bartenders. In 2022, the whiskey had its proof raised from 80 to 86 and a four-year age statement was added to the label. In addition to that, a bottled-in-bond version joined the lineup and limited-edition age statements started being released.
The cask-strength versions showed up soon after that—the first was aged for 10 years, the second for 11, and last year’s was a 12-year-old whiskey. Number four brings the age statement back down to 11 years, while the proof jumps up to 125.6, which is the highest of the series so far (the first release was bottled at 121 proof, the second at 107.4 proof, and the third at 117 proof). According to the brand, the whiskey for this release was distilled and barreled in the spring of 2014 and aged in three separate warehouses on the Clermont campus in Kentucky (given that, this could have been a bottled-in-bond release, but of course the fact that it was bottled at cask strength negates that).
We asked the brand about the age statement fluctuations in the series, and heard back from Bradford Lawrence, global associate brand manager for Suntory Global Spirits. “For each release, our blending team searches across our warehouses to identify the barrels that best express the character of Old Overholt at a cask strength proof,” he told Robb Report. “The team has intentionally explored different ages, warehouse locations, and resulting cask-strength proofs to better understand how those variables shape the final flavor on each batch. While the age statements have varied across the first several releases, the objective has remained consistent: to select a distinctive parcel of mature rye whiskey that delivers the depth, balance, and character we want the release to represent.”
We did not receive a sample of this new whiskey to try yet, but the official tasting notes describe vanilla, baking spice, and tobacco aromas on the nose, followed by allspice, sweet vanilla, caramel, and charred oak on the palate, with notes of black pepper on the finish. Old Overholt Extra Aged Cask Strength 11YR is available starting this month at select retailers around the country (SRP $110).
