The Porsche 911 Carrera S Is Available With a Manual Gearbox Again

Porsche is listening to the enthusiasts.

The German sports car maker just announced that it is bringing back the manual 911 Carrera S. The marque cited one major reason for its decision to bring the model back: “overwhelming customer demand.”

The Carrera S, which has long been viewed as the sweet spot between the entry-level 911 and its more hardcore high-performance variants like the GT3 and Turbo S, can once again be optioned with a stick shift. Yes, the automaker’s famed dual-clutch PDK remains the way to go if pure speed is what a driver craves, but those who feel that rowing through the gears adds to the experience can now choose to upgrade the model with the MT package. The premium add-on will be available on both the coupe and cabriolet versions of the two-door starting in 2027.

The variant adds more than just the six-speed manual gearbox previously found in the stick shift-only Carrera T and a clutch pedal. The MT also adds rear-wheel steering, a PASM Sport suspension that lowers ride height by 11 mm, the Sport Chrono package, titanium exhaust tips, and, for the first time on the Carrera S, standard center-locking wheels. Porsche also says the car weighs in at 3,327 pounds, which is just 11 pounds heavier than the Carrera T. The new model also comes with a walnut gear shifter, a decal on the rear window that shows the shifter pattern, and will be available in 17 exterior finishes, including Aubergine.

Untouched is the Carrera S’s quite respectable powertrain. The 992.2-generation version of the car is powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six that makes 473 hp and 391 ft lbs of torque, all of which is directed to the rear axle by its manual transmission. The model can sprint from zero to 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 191 mph.

Purists who do want to shift through the gears themselves will have to pay a premium for the Carrera S with MT package. The coupe version of the variant starts at $169,450 and the cabriolet at $183,350. That’s about $13,000 more than the standard versions of the car costs. The add-on will only be available in North America for the time being.

The return of a manual Carrera S also means that 911 buyers now have seven manuals to choose from starting in 2027. The Carrera S with MT package coupe and cabriolet join a list that includes the Carrera T (which is also available as a coupe and cabriolet), the GT3, the GT3 with Touring Package, and the GT3 S/C.
