A Rare Complete Set of Macallan Anniversary Malt Collection Is for Sale
The Macallan has no shortage of high-priced, limited-edition whiskies available, many of which are ultra-aged and extremely rare versions of its sherry cask-matured single malt. The latest to hit the secondary market is one of the rarest, what is said to be the only complete collection of the Macallan Anniversary Malt in the world, and it’s available now to purchase from a private seller.
The Macallan Anniversary Malt was first released in 1983, around the time the distillery started to focus on releasing its whisky as single malts rather than just supplying blended scotch whiskies. This was a time when these kind of vintage age statement expressions were not widely available, and over the years the bottles in this collection have increased greatly in value. The collection encompasses 19 bottles in total, with both vintage and non-vintage releases. The former includes the following years: 1957, 1958, 1958/59, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1974, and 1975.
According to an article at the website of U.K. publication the Daily Record, the owner of the collection is a 72-year-old woman named Danielle Smeyers who lives in Liguria near the Italian-French border. She started collecting the whiskies 30 years ago in the 1990s after a visit to Scotland got her interested in scotch whisky. “I didn’t set out to build a complete set, I just fell in love with Macallan and that first Anniversary Malt epitomized their whisky for me,” she is quoted as saying. “Then one bottle led to another, and it quietly became a very enjoyable mission.”
That mission could lead to a pretty big payday for Smeyers. She is selling the collection through whisky broker Mark Littler, who also is the editor in chief and owner of website the Whisky Wash. “In my entire career… I have never seen a complete set of Macallan Anniversary Malts appear for sale,” Littler told the Daily Record. “This is the only full set I am aware of anywhere in the world.” He goes on to note that the bottles are all in good condition with “excellent” fill levels and come in their original packaging.
