Airstream and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation Unveil a New Trailer

Airstream found a way to give one of its trailers even more midcentury charm.

The company is teaming up with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation for a new model called the Usonian Limited Edition Travel Trailer. The luxe caravan sports the brand’s trademark “silver bullet” exterior, along with an interior inspired by some of the late architect’s greatest designs.

The 1930s were an important time for both Airstream and Wright. During the decade, the trailer maker released the Clipper, the first of its iconic aluminum-sided models, while the architect oversaw the construction of some of his most famous designs, including Fallingwater and Taliesin West. He worked up until his death in 1959, but he never linked up with Airstream—something that his foundation is rectifying 90 years later, with this design-forward trailer.

The Usonian trailer—which takes its name from Wright’s term for structures designed specifically for the American landscape—is the rare collaboration in which the influence of both sides comes through equally. From the outside, the 28-foot, dual-axle vehicle looks like any of Airstream’s other aluminum-sided trailers, except for the yellow stripe that runs the entire circumference of the caravan, the “Frank Lloyd Wright” badging, and a special awning. But open its door or rear hatch, and it immediately becomes clear how different this trailer is from the rest of the brand’s lineup.

The interior takes inspiration from Wright’s architectural work as a whole, but especially Taliesin West. The cabin features two major multipurpose spaces connected by a narrow hallway lined with a kitchenette, a closet, and a bathroom with a toilet and shower. The front section can be used as a dining room, workspace, or secondary sleeping area, while the rear, which is accessible via that hatch door, can be used as a lounge or bedroom, with room for a king-size mattress that can be split into two twins if needed.

Spatial versatility, convertible furniture, and narrow hallways aren’t the only Wright trademarks on display inside the Usonian Trailer. The wood-lined cabin has plenty of integrated storage and is well-lit thanks to the presence of 29 windows, two of which are skylights. There is also a custom slatted ceiling figure and the Gordon Leaf Pattern, a colorful geometric design created by Wright’s apprentice, Eugene Masselink, appears throughout the interior.

Intrigued? You’ll want to register your interest with Airstream quickly. The company plans to build 200 examples of the Usonian Limited Edition Travel Trailer over the next two years. Deliveries of the $184,900 trailer are expected to begin later this summer.
