All American Renewed for Shortened Season 7 on The CW
All American has survived another round with Nexstar — but there’s a catch.
The CW, currently controlled by station group Nexstar, has renewed All American for an abbreviated 13-episode seventh season that won’t arrive until 2025. A decision on the future of its spinoff, All American: Homecoming, has not yet been determined as the show is currently airing on the network.
The CW also announced that Penn & Teller: Fool Us has been picked up for an 11th season and secured broadcast rights for the fourth season of Jesus drama The Chosen.
“A strong fall is going to lead into an even stronger 2025 on The CW as new seasons of All American, Penn & Teller: Fool Us and The Chosen join NASCAR Xfinity Series, WWE NXT, ACC football and basketball, Pac-12 football, Wild Cards, Superman & Lois, The Librarians, Inside the NFL, Sullivan’s Crossing and much more,” said Brad Schwartz, president of entertainment at The CW. “Through six seasons, All American remains a top-performer for The CW as the network’s most-watched series across all linear and digital platforms. Penn & Teller: Fool Uscontinues to be appointment television for families over a decade into its run. And we are thrilled to continue our partnership with The Chosen and bring the latest season of this groundbreaking drama exclusively to broadcast audiences across the country.”
As Schwartz outlined, The CW’s roster of U.S.-produced scripted originals has dwindled as Nexstar looks to make the network profitable for the first time in its history. Under previous owners Warner Bros. Television and CBS Studios, The CW was designed to be a middle man of sorts as both studios stocked it with scripted originals in order to sell the streaming and international rights. While that made millions for both studios, the need to control those rights for their respective streaming platforms brought an end to the network’s former business model and Warners and CBS Studios sold the majority of their stakes in The CW to Nexstar.
Since taking over, Nexstar has insisted on controlling some of those streaming rights as it looks to turn a profit for The CW for the first time. Warners and CBS Studios still retain a small percentage of the network but nearly all of their shows have been canceled in the Nexstar era. All that remains is the final season of Superman & Lois and now All American, both of which are produced by Warners. CBS Studios’ highest rated show on the network, Walker, was canceled and brought an end to star Jared Padalecki’s two-decade-long run on the network.
All American is currently airing its sixth season. The series, starring Daniel Ezra and Bre-Z, will feature its lowest episode count to date when it returns in 2025. The show’s strike-impacted sixth season features a series low of 15 episodes.
Nkechi Okoro Carroll serves as showrunner on All American and exec produces alongside Greg Berlanti Productions. (Carroll and Berlanti also are behind NBC’s already renewed drama Found.) Season three of All American: Homecoming debuts July 8. A season four renewal for Homecoming, which streams on Netflix like the flagship, is considered a longshot.
