With a grand stacked lineup including musical greats the likes of Lana Del Rey, Tyler, The Creator, Doja Cat, No Doubt, Sabrina Carpenter, Blur, Ice Spice, and Jack Antonoff’s Bleachers, Coachella 2024 was destined for greatness from the get-go. What we could not have anticipated, however, was the sheer magnitude of celebrities who turned up en-masse in support of their friends, as well as in want of a good time in the desert. The first Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival was held over two decades ago in 1999, headlined by Beck and Rage Against the Machine and attended by some 37,000 people. Then merely a humble two-day festival, Coachella’s debut was lukewarm at best, with the organisers failing to make any money. A sparkling 25 years later, the Coachella Valley festival, which is held annually beneath the starry skies of the Colorado desert, has earned its place amongst the world’s greatest music festivals.  

To date, the Coachella stage has hosted some of the biggest names and performers in the music industry: Madonna, BLACKPINK, the White Stripes, Coldplay, Beyonce, and Harry Styles, to name a few. And while the ticket sales for this year’s event have been slow, it is par for the course, with other musical festivals — The New Orleans JazzFest, The L.A. Beach Life festival, and the Daytona Beach Welcome to Rockville festival — all experiencing slower-than-average sales. 

Despite the star-studded events lineup, fans were expecting this year’s Coachella to be low-key — but were pleasantly surprised when multiple celebrities showed to make the festival a star-studded affair. As it stands now, it is estimated that about 200,000 people will attend the event over two weekends, showcasing great growth from the festival’s earliest days. 

Coachella 2024: What went down over the weekend 

Coachella 2024 is slated to be a six-day event held over the course of two weekends: April 12 to 14, and April 19 to 21. The sets, line ups, events, art, food, and activities will be repeated across the weekends, allowing fans double the chance to catch their favourite musical acts live in action. 

The festival kicked off on Friday, April 12, with a star-studded lineup including iconic crooner Lana Del Rey. Other top acts of the day included Peso Pluma, Sabrina Carpenter, and Suki Waterhouse, among others. Day 2 saw yet another spectacular lineup of stars taking the stage, including Tyler, The Creator, No Doubt, Blur, Jon Batiste, Vampire Weekend, LE SSERAFIM, Ice Spice, and Bleachers, headed by none other than Taylor Swift’s close collaborator and friend Jack Antonoff. And to close off the first weekend of Coachella 2024: Doja Cat, Reneé Rapp, FLO, JOPLYN, and Eli & Fur among others.

Best performances and moments at Coachella weekend 1 

Ice Spice’s Karma tribute

Karma is having the pleasure of performing a Taylor Swift song, while Swift herself jams to it in the crowd. As one of the celebrities performing at Coachella 2024, Ice Spice’s tribute was a fitting love letter to Swift, with whom she collaborated just last year. Taking to the stage for her set, she called out, “Shoutout to Taylor motherf–ing Swift,” following that up with a heartfelt, “I love you!” The best part: Footage has since emerged to show Swift in the crowd with her beau, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, dancing and cheering and having a ball. 

Sabrina Carpenter performs a new song 

Fresh off touring with new bestie Taylor Swift for the groundbreaking Eras tour, Sabrina Carpenter took to the stage for her Coachella set ready to razzle and dazzle in the most extraordinary of ways. Longtime fans of Carpenter were delighted with the release of a brand-new single Espresso, which the singer belted out on the Coachella main stage. The effervescent singer also dropped 10 other new songs. 

Jack Antonoff takes the stage with Bleachers 

Along with his band Bleachers, Grammy winning musician and producer Jack Antonoff performed a high-octane set. Grooving along to the music in the stands: His close friend and constant collaborator Taylor Swift, who is currently enjoying some down time before the European leg of her Eras tour.  

Olivia Rodrigo joins No Doubt on stage 

Further fuelling an epic weekend for musical performances, iconic ’90s band No Doubt reunited onstage, marking their first performance together since 2015. Poised for an electrifying performance, the band played a 15-song set list composed of fan favourites including Hella Good, Sunday Morning, Hey Baby, and Don’t Speak. A particularly enjoyable highlight of the evening came when the band brought out Olivia Rodrigo, who joined Gwen Stefani and company on stage in a nostalgic rendition of the band’s Return of Saturn (2000) single, Bathwater. 

Lana Del Rey enthrals with a hauntingly beautiful set 

The queen of haunting performances that speak to the very depths of the soul, Lana Del Rey entranced a crowd of fans on the first day of Coachella 2024. Her 20-song set list included some of her best hits, including Doin’ Time, Summertime Sadness, Pretty When You Cry, Ride, Born To Die, and Young And Beautiful. 

The enigmatic crooner also brought the crowd to its feet when she brought Grammy winner Billie Eilish onstage; the duo went on to perform Ocean Eyes and Video Games together. Eilish was not the only celebrity who joined Del Rey on stage, with Jon Batiste performing Candy Necklace by her side earlier in the set. 

Shakira announces world tour during Bizarrap set 

Yet another surprise that rocked the stage during Coachella 2024 was the appearance of Colombian musician Shakira at DJ Bizarrap’s set. Thirty minutes into Bizarrap’s performance, the singer appeared on stage to thunderous applause; the duo then performed their hits La Fuerte and BZRP Music Sessions, Vol. 53. 

The duo’s performance was far from the only surprise the duo had in store for the Coachella crowd. Addressing the audience in a mix of Spanish and English, Shakira announced an upcoming tour, the “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour”, reflecting the name of her new album. The powerful and dynamic singer went on to add that the tour would be kicking off in November 2024, sharing, “Starting here, this November, in this city! Can’t wait!” 

Suki Waterhouse reveals baby’s gender 

Suki Waterhouse, who recently welcomed a new baby with Robert Pattinson, shared a sweet baby update onstage at Coachella 2024, giving way to one of the best moments of the event. The Good Looking and OMG singer cheekily shared that she had recently experienced some ‘pretty big events’, and continued, “So, I love amazing ladies and I’ve been very lucky to have my own little amazing lady and meet the love of my life.” 

While the couple have not revealed their baby’s name, the singer’s onstage comments have provided some information for those curious about the baby’s gender: A little girl. Waterhouse later joined Pattinson on the Coachella grounds, enjoying a rare date night out together.  

Surprise celebrity appearances we’re still not over 

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce 

With the Eras tour making headlines for much of the past year, it can be difficult to imagine Taylor Swift in an audience as opposed to being onstage. And at Coachella 2024, which saw celebrities turning up in droves for the vibes and the music, she was just that — an attendee there for a good time.

Fans of the singer, whose 11th studio album The Tortured Poets Department is slated for release on April 19, were delighted when she rocked up to the event with her boyfriend Travis Kelce. The couple were spotted cosying up together at Ice Spice and the Bleachers sets, singing along and dancing whilst also enjoying the occasional spot of PDA. 

With the notable absence of bodyguards, fans delightedly pointed to Kelce’s role as Swift’s protector. The singer rocked an all-black ensemble with an oversized black and white bomber jacket and a Stella McCartney purse; she also flaunted her love for him with a green New Heights baseball cap, a nod to Kelce’s podcast with his brother, retired NFL player Jason Kelce.

Barry Keoghan of Marvel’s Eternals and Saltburn fame is the human embodiment of ‘if he wanted to, he would’. Keoghan, who was recently in Singapore to enjoy his girlfriend Sabrina Carpenter’s Eras tour opener set, also made time to support her at Coachella 2024. Video footage has since surfaced to show him enjoying the second day of Coachella alongside Sabrina Carpenter, Taylor Swift, and Travis Kelce.

Justin and Hailey Bieber were seen enjoying Ice Spice’s performance, standing in the crowd close to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce. Hailey shared posts from festival headliner Lana Del Rey’s set with Billie Eilish; she also showcased her outfit of the day: A chic pants-less look with an oversized leather jacket and matching black boots.  

Lisa Manobal 

Ateez made history as the first K-pop boy band to perform on the Coachella stage in 2024, and were met with massive support from fans and celebrities like BLACKPINK’s Lalisa and The Rose’s Woosung and Dojoon. Lisa was later photographed with Shakira, and was seen leaving the Ice Spice performance with Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter.
