A docuseries with “unprecedented access” to top NHL stars is coming to Prime Video.

The Amazon-owned streaming platform has picked up a still-untitled docuseries from Drive to Survive producer Box To Box Films and NHL Productions that will follow some of the biggest stars and teams in the sport.

Among the players being featured in the series will be Edmonton Oilers stars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl; Boston Bruins teammates David Pastrnak and Jeremy Swayman; New York Rangers captain Jacob Trouba; Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes; Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk; Vegas Golden Knights forward Jack Eichel; Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander, among others.

Crews are also embedded with the Panthers and Oilers, following McDavid, Tkachuk and their teammates and fans as they seek the Stanley Cup.

Prime Video has exclusive NHL rights in Canada, and this series will complement that, though it will also be available in the U.S. and globally.

The NHL series arrives as streaming services continue to binge on sports docuseries, particularly those that offer unprecedented access. Of course, it was Box to Box that helped drive that popularity with its F1 series.

Leagues and athletes, meanwhile, increasingly see the value in letting the public get to know the athletes more intimately.

Among other series, Netflix is in business with the NFL, the NBA, MLB, with docuseries about the Dallas Cowboys and Simone Biles also in the works. Prime Video just debuted a docuseries about Roger Federer’s final days as a pro, and also debuted a doc about Jason Kelce last year.

“We want to stay true to the world of ice hockey with the series,” said Paul Martin, co-founder of Box To Box Films and executive producer of the series. “The sport is as beautiful, skillful and graceful, as it is brutal, pressurized and powerful; and we aim to balance the energetic and fast-paced action leading up to the Stanley Cup Final, with the quiet and raw drama taking place off the ice.”

“This is so meaningful for our league. Box To Box has revolutionized modern storytelling for Formula 1, golf and tennis,” added NHL chief content officer & senior executive VP Steve Mayer. “With the full support of the League, players, coaches and owners, we welcome the opportunity to showcase our stars and the greatest season and postseason in sports – the Stanley Cup Playoffs – to a global audience.”

“This generation of NHL superstars are modern day gladiators unlike anything ever seen before, with big personalities and even bigger play makers, and we have the perfect partners to capture that energy for an unparalleled sports docuseries,” added Shaun Alperin, head of content, Prime Video, Canada. “Working with Box To Box Films and NHL Productions we cannot wait to bring to the screen the passion, the intensity, and the sheer excitement of the road to the Stanley Cup final, revealing what fans have only speculated goes on behind the scenes of the world’s fastest team sport.”
