Bentley Confirms That It Is Bringing Back the Continental Supersports

Bentley just confirmed it will be bringing back the Continental Supersports — which used to be the world’s fastest luxury sedan.
Bentley only said on its website that, “the return of an iconic name to Bentley is imminent, 100 years after it was first introduced.” The Supersports was first introduced by W.O. Bentley in 1925 with a 3.0-liter four-cylinder engine that made around 70 horsepower and could reach a top speed of over 100 mph. The new one, of course, will have a bigger engine, exponentially more power, and faster top speed. All Bentley will say, for now, is that, “This will be a rare Bentley – and one that is raring to perform. Another extraordinary car, coming soon.”
Yet, we know a few more things, thanks to Autocar. The new Continental Supersports will look different than the Continental GT, for one thing, and perhaps dramatically so.

The last Continental Supersports had a 7.0-liter W12 engine that produced 700 brake horsepower, but the new one will have an 8-cylinder engine that makes less. The new Continental Supersports will also make less power than the most powerful Continental GT, which is a hybrid that makes 771 horsepower. The Continental Supersports will make up for this, in part, by trimming some fat. The Supersports is aiming to be more of a driver’s car. Autocar thinks the Supersports’ twin-turbo V-8 engine will make around 640 brake horsepower. It will also be rear-wheel drive.
The car will get to 60 mph from a stop in 3.1 seconds and feature lots of carbon fiber to aid in weight-saving. Aerodynamic bodywork on the outside is optimized for performance, and there will probably be no rear seat. The brakes are carbon-ceramic, and the wheels are lighter in weight. In total, the car is expected to weigh some 2,000 kilograms, or 4,400 pounds, which would make it the lightest Bentley car in years.
Bentley did not give a release date for the new Continental Supersports, but a reveal this year is likely, with deliveries sometime next year. Customers are already said to be lined up. Bentley also did not give a price, but the Continental GT starts at around $300,000, so expect the Supersports to be more. In Britain, that could mean over half-a-million dollars, according to Autocar.
