Brand New Day Hits $1 Billion at Global Box Office
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has already spun its way to the billion-dollar mark at the global box office.
Sony Pictures announced Tuesday that the superhero movie, starring Tom Holland, Zendaya and Sadie Sink, has grossed $1.05 billion in its first six days. This makes it the second-fastest film to achieve this milestone, behind only Avengers: Endgame, which launched with $1.2 billion worldwide in its opening weekend in April 2019.
After appearing to be neck-and-neck with Endgame for best domestic opening weekend in history, Sony confirmed Monday that Brand New Day had swung ahead to claim the title with $360 million. This pushed Endgame’s $357.1 million sum down to second place, although its global opening total remained ahead of the $932 million that Spidey collected worldwide.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day also set records for the biggest Thursday previews and top Friday opening domestic sum, along with becoming Sony’s best-ever launch. Hailing from producers Marvel Studios and Amy Pascal, director Destin Daniel Cretton‘s feature carries a $225 million production budget.
Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman told The Hollywood Reporter that the biggest win for him was that audiences had been responding favorably to the film that earned an A CinemaScore and holds a 98 audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
“All the geniuses who said that theatrical movies were dead, they’re not necessarily right,” said Rothman, a longtime advocate for the theatrical experience. “Actually, the theatrical marketplace is booming right now, and I’m excited about it. So I’m very optimistic.”
In the wake of this head-spinning success, Imax has changed course and announced Monday that it will split screens with Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey. Spidey gives Marvel Studios new momentum ahead of this December’s release for Avengers: Doomsday, which also will not screen on Imax when it debuts.
