Bugatti Made a One-Off Cup Holder For a VIP Client
Bugatti‘s in the business of selling highly-engineered hypercars that run in the millions and their clients are just as demanding. Buying a Bugatti isn’t picking a car off the lot as much as a conversation to arrive at the Bugatti you want. Recently, one client had a simple request: a cup holder, and Bugatti came through.
Bugatti Chirons are $3 million works of art that lack cup holders because they might get in the way of performance and aesthetics, because the Chiron makes 1,479 horsepower and goes 236 mph. The Chiron is designed for track use, basically, or simply to be looked at, and less for long-haul trips or everyday errands, when one might find oneself in need of hydration.
Last year, a Bugatti owner in Texas found that out the hard way, spilling a can of Red Bull in her Chiron’s door pocket.
“I know y’all told me that I’m not allowed to drink a Big Gulp while I’m driving the fastest car on Earth,” the owner, Shannon Ralston, said. “But, at least, can I get a water holder? I live in Texas!”
Bugatti director of design Frank Heyl said at the time that he would oblige, and, on Thursday, Heyl delivered, unveiling a cup holder that fits into the Chiron’s door pocket.
The cup holder Bugatti designed can actually fit two different sizes of drinks, a water bottle and a can, perhaps Red Bull. The cup holder can also be removed for the car’s next owner, if that owner wants a more pure Bugatti experience. And the 3D-printed cup holder also doesn’t require any holes or glue for installation.
There still doesn’t seem to be room for a Big Gulp, but, as Bugatti told Ralston, drinking a Big Gulp while driving one of the fastest cars on Earth isn’t advisable. Or maybe it is, and Bugatti should go back to the drawing board. Cup holders are one of the few design elements that every car owner seems to be passionate about.
