Carroll Shelby’s Former Shelby Mustang GT500 Is Up for Grabs
It’s not every day that a classic car once owned by its namesake goes up for grabs.
A 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500 that was once part of Carroll Shelby’s personal collection is currently up for auction on Bring a Trailer. The muscle car is noteworthy on its own7, but we wouldn’t be surprised if its provenance adds a little excitement to the bidding process.
The Ford Mustang would have become the defining muscle car with or without Shelby, but there’s no denying that his involvement helped take the vehicle to another level. The first Shelby Mustang, the GT350, debuted in 1965. The two-door, which was built by Shelby American, was based on the fastback version of the first-gen ’Stang and paired a more powerful engine and other performance upgrades with a paint scheme inspired by the AC Cobra. In 1967, the final year before Ford took over production of the Shelby Mustangs, an even more powerful model called the GT500 was introduced. That year’s GT350 came with a 4.7-liter Windsor V-8 rated for 306 hp, while the GT500 came with a 7.0-liter Police-Interceptor V-8 that made 355 hp.

The GT500 up for sale was acquired by Shelby and his longtime business partner Shephen Becker around 1999, according to Car and Driver. It is finished in a brilliant coat of Wimbledon White topped with blue racing stripes and “GT500” side stripes and rides on a set of 15-inch, 10-spoke aluminum wheels. The interior, meanwhile, is covered in period-appropriate black vinyl upholstery and features a woodgrain steering wheel and a 140-mph speedometer.
The listing doesn’t name clear how long Shelby owned this GT500, though it was acquired by the current owner in 2011. During the auto legend’s time with the car it was equipped with modern air-conditioning system to make it more comfortable to drive. The engine, which was refreshed in the 1980s, was also fitted with new headers. The car shows 59,000 miles on the odometer and appears to have been well looked after based on the photos accompanying the listing.

Shelby’s old GT500 is up for auction through this coming Monday, May 18. The car is currenly located in Greece but can be shipped anywhere in the U.S. for free. As of press time, bidding had reached 220,000 Euros, or roughly $258,000.
