David Hasselhoff’s K.I.T.T. Tour Car is Heading to Auction

One of the most famous cars in television history is about to go up for grabs—sort of.

David Hasselhoff’s K.I.T.T. tour car from Knight Rider will be auctioned off by Broad Arrow at its upcoming Zurich sale. The vehicle didn’t make an appearance on the popular series, but it did accompany the actor on his extensive promotional duties as its star.

If you didn’t catch it when it was originally on NBC during the 1980s, or in syndication during the 1990s, Knight Rider was a sci-fi adventure series about the crime-fighting exploits of Michael Knight (Hasselhoff) and his A.I.-powered car, Knight Industries Two Thousand, or K.I.T.T. The latter was more than just a vehicle, though. K.I.T.T. was a full-blown character voiced by William Daniels. It was a goofy concept, but also an endearing one, that would go on to support two additional shows and three television movies.

Hasselhoff spent much of the mid ’80s on the road promoting the show with the replica that is headed to auction. The car, which is heavily modified 1982 Pontiac Firebird, accompanied the actor for TV appearances, concerts, exhibitions, and other promotional events in Europe, where the show was particularly popular. It was originally owned by Vienna Profile Promotions, Hasselhoff’s management firm of the time, and looks identical to the screen car, down to its gullwing-style steering wheel and electronics suite built to look just like the one from the first two seasons of the show. It also runs and drives, but is, unfortunately, not street-legal.

The auction listing says the car has been owned by its current unnamed owner since 1999, which means that it’s not the replica that Hasselhoff auctioned off earlier this decade. This K.I.T.T. is recorded in the Knight Rider Historians registry and was inspected by K.I.T.T. historian A.J. Palmgren in Switzerland in 2007. It also comes with a certificate of authenticity saying it was built by Thomas J. Oberhaus of Hollywood Productions.
