‘God of War’ to Recast Kratos Role Following Ryan Hurst’s On-Set Injury

God… damn it. Amazon Prime Video‘s God of War series will recast the starring role of Kratos, the titular God of War, following an injury to the original actor Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy).

Hurst tore his bicep while performing a stunt for the adaptation of the popular PlayStation video game, pausing production, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. The show had already been delayed long enough: God of War was greenlit by Prime Video in December 2022. Hurst has had surgery, but it will be a pretty long recovery.

The God of War cast and crew were informed of the decision to recast Kratos on Thursday, a source tells THR.

God of War already has a two-season commitment. Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica) is showrunner; Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun) directs the first two episodes. Those and others will undergo extensive reshoots — God of War has already filmed for months in Vancouver and had four episodes in the can.

Ed Skrein (Jurassic World Rebirth) stars opposite Hurst New Kratos, whomever that ends up being, as Baldur. The cast also includes Callum Vinson as Atreus, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, Danny Woodburn as Brok and Mandy Patinkin as Odin.

The series will follow the storyline of the two most recent God of War games, which has Kratos and his 10-year-old son Atreus (pictured above) embarking “on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”

That picture, by the way, apparently was a huge problem for God of War franchise creator David Jaffe.

“I’m sure everybody’s trying real hard, but it’s so dumb,” Jaffe said, adding it was “a terrible image.”

“It is so bad in so many ways,” he continued. “[Kratos] just looks stupid.”

The God of War TV series hails from Sony Pictures and Amazon MGM Studios. Moore, who has an overall deal at Sony, executive produces with Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia and Ben McGinnis are co-EPs. Sony and Amazon MGM are producing God of War with PlayStation Productions and Moore’s Tall Ship Productions.

TMZ first reported Hurst’s injury; Deadline first reported the news he will be recast.
