Honda Just Unveiled Its New ‘Ultimate Edition’ Civic Type R

The Honda Civic Type R, the hot hatchback that is a standard-bearer for the segment, is bowing out of Europe.

On Thursday, the automaker announced that the Civic Type R would not be offered on the continent any longer after 28 years, but not before it releases 40 special Honda Civic Type Rs to mark the occasion. The Honda Civic Type R Ultimate Edition includes special badging and comes in a special Championship White. The roof is painted black, and there is carbon in various places, including the rear wing.

When you open the driver’s side door, a Type R logo projector shines on the ground, and, inside, there are more carbon details. Lighting, meanwhile, accents the door lining, footwell, and cup holder. Under the hood, the Civic Type R Ultimate Edition won’t change from the ordinary Type R, with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine that makes 324 hp. The car is front-wheel drive and has a six-speed manual transmission. It gets to 62 mph in 5.8 seconds.

In fact, that gas-powered engine is the main reason why the Type R won’t be offered in Europe much longer, as Honda said European regulations are showing their teeth.

“The industry is changing, and our model range is having to evolve with it in accordance with European legislation,” Hannah Swift, a Honda executive, said in a statement. “However, Type R has always been Honda’s ultimate expression of our passion for driving excitement, and we look forward to celebrating its heritage in the weeks and months ahead.”

10 of the Civic Type R Ultimate Edition examples will be for the United Kingdom alone, and they will be available on a “first-come, first-serve basis,” which would almost make it like buying a regular new car. Honda did not reveal pricing, but the Civic Type R starts at £51,905 in the U.K., or around $70,500 at current exchange rates, which is already a pretty penny to pay. (The Civic Type R starts at $45,895 here in the U.S.)

European Civic Type R enthusiasts who are already inured to paying more for Civic Type Rs may not mind, especially for a car that is one of the most enduringly cool objects born of the 1990s.
