Ineos’s New Grenadier Black Edition Is for Off-Roading in Darkness

The Ineos Grenadier is a likable competitor to trucks like the G-Wagen but also a strange one that forges its own path, with many a special edition accentuating its premise. The newest is a blacked-out version called the Grenadier Black Edition that looks very G-Wagen indeed.

The Black Edition has black all over, including the body, trim, 18-inch alloy wheels, skidplate, and grille—and even black glass, almost, or privacy glass. Inside, the carpet and headlining are also black, while the rest is shades of silver for some contrast. The truck certainly lives up to its name.

What’s under the hood is unchanged. The Grenadier is powered by a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, either gas or diesel versions. The diesel version makes 245 horsepower, and the gas version makes 282 horsepower. The diesel version makes more torque, or 406 ft lbs, compared to 332 ft lbs for the gas version. If you buy the diesel version, you can also say your truck is diesel.

The Black Edition was unveiled this week in a press release, which also noted that prices for the Grenadier would remain unchanged for 2026.

The Grenadier was made in large part in response to the original Land Rover Defender dying, which Jim Ratcliffe, chairman of Ineos, thought was such a shame that he’d tried to buy the production line. Land Rover wouldn’t sell, so Ratcliffe set about making the Grenadier instead, since he saw a gap in the market for a super-capable SUV that, on paper, was a lot like the old Defender.

What Ineos built was a truck like the old Defender, albeit one with some modern conveniences. In the car world, Ratcliffe’s pluck has earned him some admiration, though sales have not necessarily followed, even if the Grenadier stacks up well in terms of price and power.

In that situation, automakers often turn to special editions to increase interest, and Ineos has been no different, with the Black Edition being the latest. The new model will start at £71,995, or around $99,000 at current exchange rates. Ineos did not say how many Black Edition Grenadiers would be produced, because that will depend on demand, but the company did say there will be a “limited production window.” If you want one, now is the time to act.
