Lyft Plans to Launch Mobileye Robotaxis in Dallas as Soon as 2026

Ever hopped into a driver-less car? Soon that may be the norm in Dallas.
Lyft is planning to launch self-driving robotaxis in the Texas metropolis as soon as 2026, Bloomberg reported. The rideshare company has teamed up with Mobileye, an autonomous-driving brand that it announced a partnership with last year, to bring the project to the roads.
The robotaxis, which will use Mobileye tech to hit the streets, will be owned by Marubeni, a Tokyo-based auto financing firm, the publication reported. The company manages over 900,000 vehicles through its subsidiaries and has seen year-over-year growth in the auto business, according to Lyft CEO David Risher’s post on X (formerly known as Twitter).
And Lyft isn’t only sticking to D-Town: It’s looking to have thousands of the self-driving cars head to more cities in the future. Right now, the company is in the “advanced planning stages to finalize” the new initiative, a spokesperson told Bloomberg. As for other projects in its pipeline, the rideshare brand had announced this past November that it was working on an autonomous fleet of Toyota Sienna minivans in partnership with start-up May Mobility; that endeavor is expected to launch sometime this year, according to the publication.
Lyft is just the latest auto company to announce an autonomous car platform. Uber has been offering self-driving cars in Phoenix for over a year, and it’s expanding the service to Austin and Atlanta in March and sometime this summer, respectively. Google’s white Waymo Jaguars have been prowling around L.A. and are now allowed to service the whole city. Unfortunately, a Waymo in Arizona led one passenger to almost miss his flight when the robotaxi kept driving in circles in a parking lot (a glitch the company says it as addressed). Looking abroad, Rimac is launching its Verne driver-less ride sharing program in Zagreb in 206, with plans to work in Manchester and other international cities. In Japan, meanwhile, start-up Tier IV has started development of its mini-van-inspired robocabs.
Of course, you could always choose to take to the skies for your commutes. Plenty of air taxis are prepping for take-off within the next few years. Hondo’s top-secret eVTOL program is expected to make a test flight soon, according to FAA paperwork, while Airbus’s electric air taxi completed its first test flight last November. No matter which avenue you choose, you’ll have plenty of ways to get around in the coming years.
