Maserati and Alfa Romeo Might Team Up on a Gas-Powered Manual Supercar

Maserati and Alfa Romeo might be working together on a new internal combustion engine supercar—and it might have a manual transmission, too.

The car would follow in the footsteps of previous projects from the duo such as the 33 Stradale and MC20, which shared a platform. The new model would also be a natural extension of two Italian automakers that share an owner in Stellantis, and the brands are less in the business of going head-to-head like Italian marques did in the past.

“We have infinite possibilities to customize products for our customers, for the entire range of Maserati,” Santo Ficili, the chief executive officer of Alfa and the chief operating officer of Maserati, told Autocar at Goodwood. “I’m imagining to do something like we did in the past, also considering Alfa Romeo.”

In addition to the 33 Stradale and MC20, Alfa Romeo and Maserati teamed up on the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione and the Maserati Granturismo. Those cars were built in Modena, as was the 4C, which is somewhat of a misunderstood masterpiece.

“A manual gearbox is an opportunity,” Davide Danesin, who is the head of engineering at Maserati, told Autocar. “I don’t see that in big series [production], but why not do a special version with a manual gearbox? No reason to say never. It could be the right choice for a limited edition of a car.”

Maserati and Alfa Romeo have a history of making good cars together, in other words, so a new collaboration isn’t the biggest surprise and, indeed, could be cause for celebration. That’s especially if it turns out to be an internal combustion engine, manual transmission, old-school sort of supercar that Maserati hinted at at Goodwood. That car would likely use the V-6 that powers the MCPura, in which it makes 621 horsepower but could potentially be tuned for more. The manual transmission is more of a stretch, since Maseratis haven’t used one in years, but the Maserati-Alfa Romeo supercar would also be extremely limited in production, making it more of a blank canvas.

Autocar speculates that such a car could cost at least a quarter-million dollars, and potentially be revealed next year. Maserati and Alfa Romeo loyalists should probably be contacting their dealers right now if they want to get a place in line.
