Mercedes-AMG’s Next Supercar Concept Could Be Its Quickest Yet

Mercedes-AMG is ready to take things to another level.
The German marque’s performance sub-brand is expected to unveil a new supercar concept later this year, according to Autocar. The prototype, which is said to be all-electric, won’t just look cool; it could also be the quickest vehicle in AMG history.
Details about the car were tucked into a larger story from the British publication about the 21 new Mercedes vehicles expected to debut over the next two years. A new CLA and GLB certainly sound intriguing, but the most noteworthy vehicle mentioned in the article is easily a supercar that will preview AMG’s next generation of EVs (the sub-brand currently offers performance versions of the EQE sedan and SUV and the EQS saloon).

We’ll have to wait for more information, but the early tidbits are rather enticing. A “high-ranking insider” told Autocar that the concept will “rewrite the term ‘electric performance.’” AMG’s answer to the Mercedes’s 620-mile EQXX concept will also preview the sub-brand’s upcoming battery-powered drivetrain, which likely will be used by upcoming electric versions of the GT four-door coupe and SUV.
“Where the EQXX aimed to go the furthest, this aims to go the fastest,” the source is quoted as saying. “It will be the fastest-accelerating car AMG has ever produced.”
The new setup will likely include an axial-flux electric motor made by Mercedes-owned Yasa and a next-generation battery that may be a solid-state unit. It’s also expected to sport an outrageous design, with 2023’s One-Eleven concept being cited as an inspiration.
A representative from Mercedes did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Robb Report on Tuesday.
The prospect of an electric AMG supercar is something worth getting excited about. The sub-brand’s last foray into the class, the record-setting One, is easily one of the most impressive vehicles in recent memory. The $2.7 million speed machine is powered by a hybrid-assisted 1.6-liter V-6 that generates more than 1,000 horses, allowing the car to shoot from zero to 62 mph in less than three seconds and hit a top speed of 217 mph. If AMG’s concept does end up going into production, here’s hoping that it, unlike the One, will be available to buy in the U.S.
