Minecraft Animated TV Series in the Works at Netflix

Minecraft is coming to Netflix.

Netflix and Mojang Studios are teaming to develop a CG-animated TV series based on the Minecraft franchise. Details on the potential series, which was announced Thursday as part of the 15th anniversary of the game, are slim other than it will feature an original story with new characters that shows the Minecraft world in a new light.

WildBrain, the studio behind Netflix’s Sonic Prime, Ninjago: Dragons Rising and Carmen Sandiego, will handle the animation for Minecraft.

Details on the project’s creative team, including a showrunner, have not yet been determined.

Markus Persson created the Minecraft game that was originally released in 2009, with Jens Bergenstein, having taken over development after the title was made more widely available in 2011. It is the best-selling video game in history, with more than 300 million copies sold, with an estimated 140 million monthly active players as of last year.

Minecraft is considered a “sandbox game,” meaning players can embrace their creativity and build cities and interact with each other. The Netflix animated series marks the franchise’s latest expansion and joins live events, consumer products and much more.

A Minecraft feature film from Warners and Legendary is expected to debut in April 2025 with Jack Black, Jason Momoa and Danielle Brooks among the cast. Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer wrote the screenplay, which was directed by Jared Hess. It’s unclear if any of the film’s creative team will be involved with the Netflix animated series.
