Morgan and Superformance Join Robb Report’s Car of the Year Contest

Robb Report’s annual Car of the Year competition has long served as both a barometer for automakers as to the success of their execution, and a compass to help discerning buyers navigate their way through the industry’s more rarefied wilderness of options. As the current automotive landscape is more diverse than ever before—from power-train configurations and styling to overall production methods and purpose—our 24th edition of the contest, which takes place November 8 through 14, truly reflects these disparate approaches that have excellence as their common denominator.

The 24th edition of Robb Report’s Car of the Year will once again take place at the exclusive Concours Club private racetrack outside of Miami.

We recently provided a preview of this year’s lineup of contenders, at least the roster so far, but have had couple more outstanding outliers recently join the field—the Morgan Supersport and a Shelby-licensed Superformance Cobra 427 S/C Cobra MKIII. As with the array of other models, these will be evaluated at the Concours Club private racetrack outside of Miami, and you are invited to be among our assemblage of judges. Here’s what to know about the two new additions.

Morgan Supersport

The Morgan Motor Company has been a boutique mainstay of British coachbuilding since 1909, and the Morgan family has remained involved ever since. From the beginning, every single example from its model line has been crafted by hand—using primarily ash, aluminum, and leather—and almost entirely by commission. Its famed Plus 4, the first iteration of which was introduced in 1950, saw the latest generation coming stateside in 2025, appearing on the market as the Plus Four. Shortly after its arrival, it was entered in Robb Report’s Car of the Year U.K., and we subsequently named it the Best Sports Car of 2025.

Morgan Motor Company’s handcrafted Supersport roadster, debuted during Monterey Car Week in August, is one of the latest additions to Robb Report’s 2027 Car of the Year event in November.

Morgan Motor Company

“Over the years I’ve driven hundreds of sports cars, supercars, hypercars, and historic classics,” says former Robb Report editor Robert Ross, who recently took delivery of his own Plus Four. “Most are more powerful, luxurious, and expensive than the Morgan Plus Four, but none of them is more fun. For charm, looks, and pure entertainment, this car is absolutely off the charts.”

Now, Morgan’s new flagship Supersport has come to the United States, debuting at the Quail, a Motorsports Gathering as part of Northern California’s renowned Monterey Car Week this past August. As with the rest of Morgan’s lineup, the Supersport has a decidedly bygone-era aesthetic, imparting the expectation that it would be found in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s garage. Yet the engineering and interior amenities are decidedly modern.

The Morgan Supersport boasts styling that’s part Art Deco, part Steampunk, and part contemporary elegance.

The retro-chic roadster has a bonded-aluminum platform—weighing just 225 pounds—as its foundation. Propulsion comes from BMW’s B46 TwinPower Turbo inline-four engine that delivers 251 hp, which is plenty of muscle for a vehicle tipping the scales at only 2,520 pounds (curb weight). The power plant is mated to a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. With styling that’s part Art Deco, part Steampunk, and part contemporary elegance, the Supersport comes with the choice of either a removable composite-hardtop roof or a retracting mohair soft-top setup. Our judges will likely opt for open-air motoring, to better experience every visceral moment.

Superformance Cobra 427 S/C MKIII

There’s arguably no other model in history that visually defines the sports car in its most minimal and masterful form than Carroll Shelby’s original Cobra, debuted in 1962. The Cobra gracing our contest is Superformance’s Shelby-licensed continuation of the 1965 Cobra 427 Sport-Competition (S/C) MKIII, a model version that, in street-legal guise, comprised a run of only 31 examples in period.

Superformance's Cobra 427 S/C MKIII, chassis No. SPO3913, is a Shelby-licensed continuation version of the bygone-era model.

Superformance

At the moment, Superformance has yet to decide which of two Cobras will be sent for Robb Report’s competition. Chassis No. SPO3913 is powered by 5.0-liter Coyote V-8—revving to 8,500 rpm—riding on 18-inch wheels. The second option being considered, chassis No. SPO3946, is fit with a 408 ci (6.6-liter) V-8—mated to a Tremec five-speed manual transmission—and dressed in 15-inch wheels. Whichever one lines up in the Concours Club’s pit lane, it will be a portal back to last century’s golden age of motorsport the moment you climb into the cockpit.
