Oscar De La Hoya on Listing Las Vegas House for $20 Million

Boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya is the latest celebrity to move his family and his businesses — including Golden Boy Promotions, a major player in pay-per-view sporting events — to Sin City.

On Thanksgiving 2023, De La Hoya and his partner, sports broadcaster Holly Sonders, moved into their luxurious five-bedroom, seven-bathroom home, which they reportedly purchased for $14.6 million while it was under construction, in the upscale community of Henderson, Nevada, a quick 15 miles from Vegas.

“It’s got a modern feel to it, but it’s very homey. It’s very warm,” Sonders tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And that’s what we love about it.”

Built by Blue Heron, the one-acre, hilltop, ultra-modern, smart-tech compound is in the gated community of MacDonald Highlands. Known for its state-of-the-art mansions, it broke records in 2020 when loanDepot founder Anthony Hsieh purchased a compound in the development for $25 million.

The De La Hoya compound features an outdoor living room, electronic glass doors, multiple pools, a $500,000 man cave with a golf simulator, a wine room, spa, hair salon, media room and uninterrupted, breathtaking views of the Nevada desert. “You have the valley to the right … and you have a straight view of the Strip,” Sonders says. “At nighttime, it is spectacular. Like July 4th there you could see fireworks. Every single firework. Every day it’s just so fresh and clear.”

The couple bought the home, located on the DragonRidge golf course, early enough in the process to customize it to befit the storied eight-time world champion. “We turned [one room] into a trophy room where I was able to put a customized boxing ring inside the room,” De La Hoya says. “I have all my championship belts and all the various different robes that I wore for different fights. I have them on mannequins. And so, it’s kind of like a tribute room.”

But only weeks after they moved in, they started getting inquiries into the property. “We’ve gotten a couple big offers already on our home, even though we’ve only been in for a couple months,” Sonders says. She wasn’t surprised: “It has that beautiful curb appeal, and I would say the best view in Vegas.”

And so, De La Hoya and Sonders decided to seize the opportunity and listed the 9,954-square-foot home for $20 million. Zar Zanganeh of The Agency holds the listing.

Their decision mirrors the frenetic pace of growth in the Las Vegas area in the past five years. In the last year alone, home sales have gone up 4.5 percent in Henderson, home to desirable communities including MacDonald Highlands and Seven Hills.

The sports-loving couple aren’t going far. They are currently planning a new home on a larger plot in Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis’s new luxurious 300 homesite development Ascaya in Henderson. “We went over to Ascaya,” Sonders recalls, “and literally fell in love with some land there. And I thought to myself, why not if we are getting all these offers already, why not? Why not build our dream home from scratch?”

De La Hoya has long loved design, so the project is an exciting one for the couple to embark on. “I always ask Oscar, if you weren’t a boxer, what would you be?” Sonders says. “And he said he would be an architect. He always had a passion for that.”

East L.A. native De La Hoya has long had a symbiotic relationship with Las Vegas, where he won some of his biggest fights.

“For me, I saw it as an opportunity to move all my business over to Las Vegas,” he says. “And the vision — just like Mark Wahlberg and Sony have of building studios [in Vegas] — is for me to build my headquarters in Las Vegas. You have production. You have the arena, my own arena, which can see about 5,000 people. So, it’s exciting times, and I think it was a long time coming. I should have done this a long time ago, ever since my first fight back in 1993.”

Though they will be saying goodbye to their MacDonald Highlands compound much sooner than they thought, De La Hoya and Sonders say they have cherished their time in the home, high above the pressures of the celebrity merry-go-round. “This is a beautiful sanctuary,” Sonders says. “It feels like home.”
