Outdoor Movie Screenings in Los Angeles This Summer

Outdoor movie screenings and Los Angeles seem to go hand-in-hand.

The city has no shortage of venues to catch a movie under the stars, as several outdoor screening series spend the summer taking over iconic L.A. landmarks.

Having become a Hollywood staple, it’s hard to scroll through social media in the summer without seeing at least one picture taken at Cinespia screening at the iconic Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Meanwhile, Street Food Cinema offers screenings at several venues including Will Rogers State Historic Park in Pacific Palisades and The Autry Museum, located inside Griffith Park.

Whether you’re looking for a fun night out with friends or a family friendly summer activity, there are a slew of screenings around L.A. Check out some of them below.

Cinespia

The long-running outdoor movie series, currently presented by Amazon MGM Studios, offers a variety of outdoor screenings that bring in large crowds. It’s not uncommon to see large groups of friends carting bags of food and drinks (guests are allowed to bring their own beer and wine) for a summer night picnic. Cinespia often encourages moviegoers to dress up in costume — their recent screening of D.E.B.S. with L.A. Pride brought a slew of fans dressed in plaid school uniforms like the characters in the film. While Hollywood Forever Cemetery remains a mainstay for the series, Cinespia has also hosted screenings at L.A. Historic State Park, The Rose Bowl Stadium and The Greek Theatre.

Street Food Cinema

Street Food Cinema hosts over 50 events in the L.A. area throughout the year. Having launched in 2012, the outdoor movie series puts on screenings across the city from The Autry Museum in Griffith Park to Will Rogers State Historic Park in Pacific Palisades. For those who want to regularly attend the outdoor screenings, Street Food Cinema offers a season pass beginning in April and lasting through October. True to its name, the screening series also hosts a variety of food trucks at each event.

Summer Poolside Cinema Series

The Fairmont Miramar Hotel and Bungalows has partnered up with Hulu to bring movies poolside at the Santa Monica hotel. The streamer has curated a selection of movies for the intimate setting. Hotel guests are able to join a screening free of charge, meanwhile, guests that buy tickets are offered free popcorn and a $45 food & beverage credit.

Rooftop Cinema Club DTLA

True to its name, Rooftop Cinema Club, located on the fourth floor terrace of the Level Hotel, offers moviegoers a chance to check out movies and a view. The downtown screening series sets itself apart by offering guests a pair of their own personal headphones to watch the movie. With screenings nearly daily, Rooftop Cinema Club has the widest variety of outdoor movies in the city.

Movies at The Steps

For those looking for a spot to catch movies under the stars with kids, The Culver Steps in Culver City are hosting family friendly movies every Friday night. The screenings begin around 8:30 p.m., or sunset, and complimentary popcorn is provided. The biggest highlight is without a doubt the price though: free.
