Porsche Is Stockpiling ICE Macans While It Still Can
Those thinking about buying a gas-powered Porsche Macan may want to put the pedal to the metal.
The first-generation of Porsche’s popular SUV is set to go out of production sometime this summer despite its continued success. And, in order to keep the best-selling model around a little longer, the marque is stockpiling as many examples as it can between now and then.
If you’re wondering why Porsche is discontinuing its most popular model, it’s because the compact SUV is more than a decade old at this point. Introduced in 2014, the ICE Macan is so old that its successor, the all-electric, second-generation Macan, has already been on the market for two years.

Despite the presence of its younger sibling, the gas-powered SUV remains incredibly popular. In the first quarter of 2026, it handedly outsold its successor 10,130 units to 2,051 units. The ICE vehicle, which Porsche hasn’t been able to sell in Europe since the middle of 2024 due to cybersecurity regulations, is especially popular in the U.S., which has long been one of the company’s most important sales regions. One reason why the Macan Electric has so far failed to become a hit stateside is thought to be the current presidential administration’s decision to do away with the $7,500 federal EV tax credit last year. So, the company will look to counter this by selling the ICE Macan as long as it can.
That is why Jochen Breckner, a member of Porsche’s Board for Finance and IT, said the automaker is looking to stockpile ICE Macans “as much as we can” during a recent earnings call, according to Motor1.com. The company is currently building as many examples of the model as it can at its Leipzig factory. The goal is to have enough gas-powered versions of the vehicle to last into 2027 in some regions.
As for why Porsche doesn’t just build the gas-powered Macan for a little longer, it’s because business decisions like that tend to be made years in advance. Fortunately, the automaker has an all-new gas-powered SUV on the way that could help make up for its absence. Porsche is currently working on a ICE model that will be positioned beneath the Cayenne when it arrives in 2028.
