Porsche’s Taycan and 718 Boxter Could Be on the Chopping Block: Report
Volkswagen Group is preparing to slim down, and some Porsches may pay the price.
Last week, the international auto conglomerate announced plans to “gradually” streamline its lineup of vehicles by “up to 50 percent.” Volkswagen Group has yet to announce what brands or models would be affected by the new cost-cutting strategy, but a new report claims that up to four Porsches may be at risk.
Over the week, German newspaper Bild (via Motor1.com) published a list of 10 VW Group vehicles that could be headed for the chopping block. Of those, four are made by the Stuttgart-based sports car maker: the Taycan, the Cayenne Coupe, and both gas-powered coupe and roadster versions of the next-gen 718.
The gas-powered version of the next-gen Porsche 718 is said to be at risk.

The first two models that Bild named won’t come as too much of a surprise. The Taycan may be a critically lauded record breaker, but it’s yet to catch on with the German marque’s customer base. Over the first half of 2026, the EV was outsold nearly five to one by the brand’s longest-running model, the 911. The Cayenne Coupe, meanwhile, is a slightly more rakish version of the brand’s first SUV. The paper expects both models to die after their current generations end.
The second pair of models do come as a bit of a shock, though. That’s because it was only last year that Porsche announced plans to build range-topping ICE versions of the next-generation 718, which initially has been announced as an exclusively battery-powered car. Bild makes no mention of the EV version of the Boxster and Cayman, suggesting that Porsche has no intention of pulling the plug on those models, despite prior speculation.
A spokesperson for Porsche told Robb Report on Tuesday that they could not comment on the Bild report. But they did refer to a press release from last month, in which the automaker announced plans to present its “Strategy 2035” road map at its Capital Markets Day event on October 7. That suggests we won’t have to wait too much longer to find out what’s going on.
In addition to the Porsche named in the newspaper’s report, other vehicles said to be at risk include the VW Jetta and Taos, the Audi Q5 Sportback and Q6 e-tron Sportback, the Cupra Raval, and the Skoda Fabia. No Bentley or Lamborghini models are mentioned in the story, suggesting that the luxury marque and supercar maker may not be affected by the new strategy.
