Red Bull Just Unveiled the Production Version of Its RB17 Hypercar

Red Bull just unveiled the final design of its first production car, the RB17, and the V-10 hypercar looks just about ready for the track.

The Red Bull RB17 was first announced in 2022, when it was slated to be a Formula 1-inspired race car but with seating for two. That general profile hasn’t changed much in the years since, and the model most recently unveiled still has the same footprint as Red Bull’s F1 car, though some details have changed, including its face.

The RB17 is powered by a V-10 engine in a hybrid setup that will make in the neighborhood of 1,200 horsepower, with 1,000 brake horsepower being produced by the gas engine and 200 brake horsepower added thanks to an electric motor. The car was designed by Adrian Newey, the legendary Formula 1 car designer, who has since left Red Bull for Aston Martin but is said to be “keeping a keen eye” on the RB17’s development, according to Top Gear.

That’s because, even though Newey is presumably hard at work right now trying to make Aston Martin’s F1 team competitive, he also has the time to call Red Bull about the RB17.

“Adrian’s allowed [to consult on the project], and he’s still interested in what’s going on,” Rob Gray, technical director of Red Bull Advanced Technologies, told Top Gear. “But to an extent we got what we needed from him, we know what he wanted the car to look like and he’s always on the end of the phone if we need him.

“One of the last changes Adrian made was to move the exhaust onto the spine of the engine cover,” Gray added. “That’s quite a big change, and led to a lot of work on the thermal side of things. To stop bits catching fire.”

Among the other new additions is a windshield wiper. There is also now a basic interior, though final testing of the car is still in progress, with track runs likely happening this summer. Production, meanwhile, likely won’t begin until early 2027. Just 50 examples of the RB17 are going to be made, at a price north of $6 million. Customers are probably happy to wait.
