Rivian Unveils New California Dune Edition Versions of the R1S and R1T

Rivian first limited-edition models were designed for play.
The EV maker has just unveiled exclusive California Dune Edition variants of the R1S and R1T. The battery-powered SUV and truck sport a special paint job and come equipped with the company’s all-terrain package.
There will be no mistaking the California Dune Editions for any of Rivian’s other EVs. The limited-edition R1S and R1T come finished exclusively in a new color called California Dune. The warm earth tone was inspired by the sands found in California’s deserts, according to the automaker, and is accentuated by Rivian’s Darkout Package. The EVs also come loaded with off-roading goodies, including a reinforced underbody shield, a roof rack with traction boards, and spare tires. Rounding the exterior details out is a choice of dark or body-colored 20-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires.

The variants also feature a new two-tone interior motif. The lower half of the cabin is clad in Sandstone and the top in Black Mountain. It’s a slick color combo that pairs nicely with the exterior of the vehicle. The rest of the space has been left untouched, including the 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Drivers can use the display to engage the California Dune Edition’s “Soft Sand” driving mode.
The exclusive SUV and truck are only available with Rivian’s new Tri-Motor R1 powertrains. The setup, which situates one motor on the front axle and two on the back, isn’t the company’s most powerful—that would be the new Quad-Motor powertrain—but it still produces a more than respectable 850 hp and 1,103 ft lbs of torque. The last figure, in particular, should make driving over the different types of terrain one encounters in the desert a breeze. The R1S and R1T can both accelerate from zero to 60 mph 2.9. The all-terrain tires do impact range, though. The variants offer an EPA-estimated range of 329 miles, which is 42 miles fewer than that of the standard tri-motor version equipped with 22-inch road wheels.
