If you took a shot every time Jake Gyllenhaal‘s character proclaims “I did not kill her” in the trailer for Apple TV+‘s Presumed Innocent — actually, just don’t do that.
“I don’t know how many times I have to say this,” Gyllenhaal’s Rusty Sabich proclaims at one point in the trailer. The answer, based on the evidence in the clip, is 13 (or possibly 14 — a rapid-fire audio montage near the end makes the count a little murky) times, with a “Do you really think I killed [her]?” thrown in as well.
Presumed Innocent, which premieres June 12, is based on Scott Turow’s best-selling 1987 novel about a prosecutor (Gyllenhaal’s Rusty) who is accused of murdering a colleague (Renate Reinsve) with whom he had an affair. The novel was previously adapted for a 1990 feature film that starred Harrison Ford as Rusty.
The limited series comes from showrunner David E. Kelley — a veteran of coutroom dramas from L.A. Law to The Lincoln Lawyer and executive producer J.J. Abrams. Apple ordered the series in early 2022.
Ruth Negga, Bill Camp, O-T Fagbenle, Chase Infiniti, Elizabeth Marvel, Nana Mensah, Renate Reinsve, Peter Sarsgaard and Kingston Rumi Southwick also star, with Negga playing the key role of Rusty’s wife and Sarsgaard the lead prosecutor on Rusty’s case. Per Apple’s description, this version of Turow’s story will explore “obsession, sex, politics, and the power and limits of love, as the accused fights to hold his family and marriage together.”
Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions and David E. Kelley Productions produce Presumed Innocent in association with Warner Bros. Television. Abrams and Kelley executive produce with Bad Robot’s Rachel Rusch Rich, David E. Kelley Productions’ Matthew Tinker, Dustin Thomason, Sharr White, Gyllenhal and directors Anne Sewitsky and Greg Yaitanes. Turow and Miki Johnson are co-EPs. Sewitsky directed the first two and the final episode of the series, with Yaitanes helming episodes three through seven.
