Tangent Unveils the Off-Road-Ready Urban Safari 911
You don’t always need an excuse to do something cool.
Chicago’s Tangent Design Group has just unveiled a Safari-style Porsche 911 that was designed specifically for the streets of its hometown. The gorgeous one-of-a-kind off-roader isn’t a commission for a client, either. Instead, it’s a pure labor of love.
The Midwestern design studio first dreamed up the idea that would become the Urban Safari 911 way back in 2019, after working on another 911-based project for a client. Two years later, the Tangent took delivery of a 2021 Carrera 4 finished in Paint-to-Sample Black Olive over a tan leather interior. Then, it got to work turning Porsche’s most iconic sports car into an all-conditions beast that can be driven around the Windy City no matter the weather or time of year.

Tangent’s engineering team has outfitted the two-door with all manner of all-terrain accessories, some of which are bespoke pieces crafted using the firm’s large-format 3D printer. This includes a bull bar for the front equipped with a trio of fog lamps, prominent fender flares, and a roof rack for any toys (like snowshoes or an ax) you might want to take on your adventure. The most intriguing piece of new hardware, though, is a “first-of-its-kind” custom lift kit that boosts the vehicle’s ride height by three inches, without messing with the suspension’s factory electronics. Rounding things out is a zesty yellow graphics package that was designed in-house, a full ducktail rear wing, and a set of bespoke wheels from Brixton wrapped in chunky off-road tires.
Tangent is a design studio, so it’s little surprise that the Urban Safari 911’s mechanical hardware, aside from its suspension, appears to have been left untouched. The 992.1-generation Carrera 4 is powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six which makes 379 hp and 331 ft lbs of torque, all of which is routed to all four wheels via an 8-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission. The factory version of the car can sprint from zero to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds and hit a top speed of 180 mph.

Anyone in Chicago interested in seeing the Urban 911 Safari can check out the car parked outside of Tangent’s studio space. The firm seems to have no plans to sell the car but does say that anyone with questions about the setup should reach out.
