The Most Expensive Cars Ever Sold at Auction

It wouldn’t be a stretch to describe the automobile auction market as having reached new heights during the first half of the 2020s. That’s the only way to explain the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR known as the “Uhlenhaut Coupe” selling for $142 million in 2022 and becoming the most expensive auction car of all time in the process. The mind-boggling hammer price obliterated the previous high sum paid for a car at auction—by nearly $100 million.

No one expected the silver Gullwing, which was sold to benefit charity, to fetch quite as much as it did, but cars going for absurd amounts is nothing new. All you need to do is take a look at the list of the highest auction results of all time, which Robb Report has compiled with the help of the valuation experts at Hagerty. There are entries in the top 25 dating as far back as 2013—something that can’t be said for something like sports cards—though seven entries changed hands this decade. It actually looked like things were cooling down after no cars sold for over $20 million in 2024, but then two commanded fees in excess of $35 million during the first six weeks of the new year.  Just more proof that serious collectors will make a run at their dream cars no matter what the financial climate may be like.

“While record prices have been set more frequently in times of economic prosperity, the very best cars often come to market at unexpected times, and enthusiast collectors often respond accordingly,” John Wiley, Hagerty’s manager of valuation analytics, told Robb Report.

With that in mind, here is a closer look at the 25 most expensive auction vehicles of all time. Just don’t be surprised to see things shaken up again before the year is out.
