Lamborghini Countach” are two of the most evocative words in the automotive lexicon. Ever since the iconoclastic model broke cover as the prototype LP500 in 1971, it has been the heartthrob of both teenaged dreamers and affluent enthusiasts. The last “original” Countach rolled out of Sant’Agata Bolognese in 1990 as a not-so-svelte 25th Anniversary edition that culminated a run of 2,049 examples since the first LP400 of 1974. But the name—one celebrating the enduring legacy of the Raging Bull’s most famous car—made an encore appearance as the 2022 Countach LPI 800-4.

Emerging four years later than a 17-year cicada, the resurrected Countach was unveiled in August 2021 at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, and comprises a production run of only 112 examples. Styled by Mitja Borkert, the director of Lamborghini Centro Stile since 2016, it evokes the original Countach while sharing the carbon-fiber monocoque and mechanical underpinnings of the Aventador and the Sián FKP 37. The specific number the production run is limited to pays tribute to the internal LP112 project name used throughout the development of the original Countach.

One such example—showing just 85 miles on it—is on offer at online auction house Bring a Trailer and slated to sell on September 19. The car, currently in Austin, Tex., was purchased new from Lamborghini Austin in February 2023 by the consignor. It was ordered under the Lamborghini Ad Personam program in Oro Eleos (Oro being “gold” in Italian, and Eleos meaning “mercy” in Greek) for the exterior, while the interior is dressed in Nero Ade leather. It’s a color combination that evokes the Countach ethos in no uncertain terms.

The exterior’s Oro Eleos color scheme is complemented by an interior that features stitching and other trim accents done in the same shade of gold.

This contemporary Countach’s underpinnings will be familiar to the Lamborghini faithful. The Aventador’s naturally aspirated, 6.5-liter V-12 engine powers the four wheels, in this instance assisted by a 48-volt electric motor and a supercapacitor integrated with a seven-speed automated manual transmission. The combined output exceeds 800 hp, almost twice that of the 1990 Countach 25th Anniversary edition.

This vehicle also includes $78,000 in Ad Personam options (easy to do), including Oro Eleos script and badging, Oro Eleos stitching, a tricolor start-stop switch, Oro Eleos steering-wheel trim, and a gold console badge. A gloss carbon-fiber exterior package and gold-color “phone dial” wheels embellish this Countach with as much bling as could be imagined by the in-house team, who no doubt advised in the car’s configuration.

The new owner will doubtless appreciate that underneath the hood is a Countach profile sketch drawn by Borkert, accompanied by signatures of the executive, design, and production teams. The $2.8 million window sticker from 2022 suggests that this will be a very interesting auction. For a collector seeking a bookend to a great first-series Countach LP400, this is a chance to go for the gold.
