For its ninth edition, Art Central 2024 celebrates its return to its iconic Central Harbourfront location with its most extensive and diverse programme yet.

Taking place from March 28 to 31, Art Central 2024 reveals a dynamic programme curated by Enoch Cheng. Expect live performances, video screenings, large-scale sculptural installations, talks, and tours with a focus on sensory exchange and encounters that will challenge expectations, excite, and inspire viewers.

As the popular Yi Tai Sculpture & Installation Projects sector makes a return, Art Central launches “Neo,” a place dedicated to highlighting first-time exhibitors and debuting artists. This year’s highlights also include a specially commissioned sculptural installation by Hong Kong artist Ho Sin Tung.

“Art Central is well-known for showcasing young and fresh ideas in art, providing a diverse experience for artists, galleries, arts professionals, and its vibrant audiences,” said Enoch Cheng. “In the upcoming edition, we explore how, in 2024, we can create an even more engaging and relevant occasion for local, regional, and international visitors to appreciate, think and exchange with, take part in and create art together.”

Audiences can interact and actively participate in the staged artistic experiences presented throughout the fair. In the Hong Kong debut of Norico Sunayama’s world-renowned performance artwork, A Sultry World, explore the liminal space under the red dress and the boundary between public and private, running for the full five days.

Other highlights include Art-is-Here by Enoch Cheng, where the audience can join a picnic with local arts and cultural practitioners to discuss the function of art and its impact. Planting Tastes by Scarlet Yu will also invite visitors to participate as performers narrate and demonstrate stories about taste and the flow of culinary influences through cultures and communities.

The Art Central 2024 programme includes the unveiling of Ho Sin Tung’s large-scale artwork which was specially commissioned for the Fair. Titled Shadow Boxing, the work draws from the artist’s passion for martial arts and the discipline required to master it. The sculptural installation also embodies the Fair’s commitment to uplifting Hong Kong art and artists by celebrating the work of a mid-career artist.

In the return of Art Central’s longest-standing sector, this year’s Yi Tai Sculpture & Installation Projects features five large-scale artworks. Kyoto-based Korean artist Sangsun Bae examines human relationships and womanhood using rope and ceramic knots. Meanwhile, Prague-based Rony Plesl prompts us to reflect on the location of sacred spaces in society through his masterful cast glass sculptures, including uranium cast glass.

Other participating artists include Andrea Samory and his otherworldly 3D-printed figures, Sam Shendi and his elegant steel sculptures that evoke human movements, and Wataru Yamakami and his painting of apocalyptic-themed objects devoid of humans.
